wide. Bracts linear acuminate longer than pedicel. Sepals lanceolate
acute. Petals wider. Lip ovate, side-lobes broad erect rounded
purple, midlobe short acute, dark brown with 8 raised nerves and
3 keels. Column stout, wings rather large. Hab. Mountains on
banks in forest, rare at about 4500 ft. altitude. Perak, Thaipmg
Hills (Kunstler, Curtis, etc.); Gunong Batu Putih (Wray).
27. ACANTHEPHIPPIUM, Bl.
Terrestrial plants with a cylindric pseudobulb and few large
herbaceous ovate leaves, ribbed and plicate petioled. Raceme short
from the base of pseudo bulb, base covered with large sheaths.
Flowers large ventricose. Sepals cohering, tips recurved, laterals
adnate to foot of column; mentum large saccate. Petals narrow
erect. Lip very small stipitate on column foot, side-lobes broad
erect, midlobe recurved, a callus on disc. Column short, stout,
foot very long. Pollinia 8 erect. Species 5 or 6, Indo-Malaya,
China.

Stem about 4 in. long. Leaves oblong-Ianceolate acute at both
ends, 1'5 to 2 ft. long, 6 to 7 in. wide. Raceme stout, 4 in. long.
Bracts large ovate acuminate green ribbed. r'5 in. long. Pedicel
and ovary shorter. Flower 2 in. long. Sepals yellowish striped
pink. Petals nearly as broad. Lip claw long, side-lobes oblong,
truncate, rosy white, disc 4 lamella! toothed, in middle of lip.
Anther conic. Capsule 3 in. long, clubbed. Hab. Woods. Negri
Sembilan, Tampin (Burklll). Distrzb. Java.

Terrestrial herb, with underground rhizome. Leaves 1 or 2,
post-floral, lanceolate narrow, plicate. Scape tall, slender; flowers
pendulous racemed. Bracts large scarious. Sepals sub-equal,
laterals adnate to column base. Petals narrow spathulate. Lip
sessile erect, side-lobes oblong, midlobe short, disc with 3 to 5
fimbriate or crested ridges. Column slender. no foot. Anther
4-celled. Pollinia 8. pear-shaped. Species 6 to 8, Indo-Malaya,
Africa, Australia, but nearly all might be considered one species.

3 ft. tall, with lanceolate acuminate sheath leaves. Flowers about
20, rather distant, pink. Bracts lanceolate long-acuminate caudate,
'5 in. long. Pedicel and ovary '25 in. long, pubescent. Sepals
'25 in. long, lanceolate long-acuminate pubescent, pink. Petals
very narrow linear. Lip shorter, yellow. Hab. Local on sandy
heaths. Lankawi, Bucau (Robinson). Setul heath. Distrtb. In·dia.
