acute. Petals wider. Lip ovate, side-lobes broad erect rounded<br />

purple, midlobe short acute, dark brown with 8 raised nerves and<br />

3 keels. Column stout, wings rather large. Hab. Mountains on<br />

banks in forest, rare at about 4500 ft. altitude. Perak, Thaipmg<br />

Hills (Kunstler, Curtis, etc.); Gunong Batu Putih (Wray).<br />

27. ACAN<strong>THE</strong>PHIPPIUM, Bl.<br />

Terrestrial plants with a cylindric pseudobulb and few large<br />

herbaceous ovate leaves, ribbed and plicate petioled. Raceme short<br />

from the base of pseudo bulb, base covered with large sheaths.<br />

Flowers large ventricose. Sepals cohering, tips recurved, laterals<br />

adnate to foot of column; mentum large saccate. Petals narrow<br />

erect. Lip very small stipitate on column foot, side-lobes broad<br />

erect, midlobe recurved, a callus on disc. Column short, stout,<br />

foot very long. Pollinia 8 erect. Species 5 or 6, Indo-Malaya,<br />

China.<br />

Stem about 4 in. long. Leaves oblong-Ianceolate acute at both<br />

ends, 1'5 to 2 ft. long, 6 to 7 in. wide. Raceme stout, 4 in. long.<br />

Bracts large ovate acuminate green ribbed. r'5 in. long. Pedicel<br />

and ovary shorter. Flower 2 in. long. Sepals yellowish striped<br />

pink. Petals nearly as broad. Lip claw long, side-lobes oblong,<br />

truncate, rosy white, disc 4 lamella! toothed, in middle of lip.<br />

Anther conic. Capsule 3 in. long, clubbed. Hab. Woods. Negri<br />

Sembilan, Tampin (Burklll). Distrzb. Java.<br />

Terrestrial herb, with underground rhizome. Leaves 1 or 2,<br />

post-floral, lanceolate narrow, plicate. Scape tall, slender; flowers<br />

pendulous racemed. Bracts large scarious. Sepals sub-equal,<br />

laterals adnate to column base. Petals narrow spathulate. Lip<br />

sessile erect, side-lobes oblong, midlobe short, disc with 3 to 5<br />

fimbriate or crested ridges. Column slender. no foot. Anther<br />

4-celled. Pollinia 8. pear-shaped. Species 6 to 8, Indo-Malaya,<br />

Africa, Australia, but nearly all might be considered one species.<br />

Rhizome I to 2 in. long. Leaf I, very narrow. Scape 2 to<br />

3 ft. tall, with lanceolate acuminate sheath leaves. Flowers about<br />

20, rather distant, pink. Bracts lanceolate long-acuminate caudate,<br />

'5 in. long. Pedicel and ovary '25 in. long, pubescent. Sepals<br />

'25 in. long, lanceolate long-acuminate pubescent, pink. Petals<br />

very narrow linear. Lip shorter, yellow. Hab. Local on sandy<br />

heaths. Lankawi, Bucau (Robinson). Setul heath. Distrtb. In·dia.
