I have twice found plants of a small Paphwpedtlum with famtly tessellate<br />

leaves m sandy spots on the south shore of J ohor; no flowers were seen, and<br />

I failed to grow it. It appears to be allied to P. barbatum.<br />

Herbs terrestrial, rarely epiphytic, rhizomatous aromatic.<br />

Leaves thinly membranous or rather fleshy, large ovate or lanceolate,<br />

usually petioled shortly, and ligulate, sheathing below. Flowers<br />

medium to large and showy, irregular, in panicles or dense cymes<br />

or heads, bracteate, terminal or from the rhizome, rarely (Plagiostachys)<br />

falsely lateral. Calyx tubular usually trifid. Corolla<br />

tubular with three linear or oblong lobes. Lip usually broad and<br />

differently coloured, entire or trilobed. Staminodes 2, petaloid or<br />

reduced to points at the base of the lip or absent. Stamen one,<br />

2-celled; anther terminal, the connective often prolonged into a<br />

crest or lateral spurs. Style slender filiform, lying between the<br />

anther-cells; stigma cup-shaped. Ovary superior 3-celled; ovules<br />

axile. Fruit capsular or sub-baccate. Seeds usually numerous<br />

aromatic, often arillate, albumen floury, Numerous in the tropics<br />

of the Old World, scanty in the New World.<br />
