Leaves lanceolate acuminate-caudate plicate, glabrous above,<br />

cobwebby beneath, 2'5 ft. long, 6 in. wide. Racemes erect, 2 in.<br />

long; peduncles short flat. Bracts stiff oblong acute, tips recurved,<br />

2 in. long, '5 in. wide, glabrous. Flowers ochre yellow,<br />

'75 in. across. Sepals lanceolate acute. Petals shorter blunter.<br />

Ovary pubescent, beaked. Fruit greenish white, long-beaked.<br />

Seeds few and small. Hab. In long grass and scrub in open country<br />

in the south of the Peninsula. Singapore (Wallich); Garden Jungle.<br />

Johor (Ridley). Distrib. Malay islands.<br />

Stem very short. Leaves lanceolate hairy on both sides, 3'5 ft.<br />

long or less, 6·in. wide; petioles over 6 in. long. Spikes erect on<br />

peduncles 3 to 4 in. long, at first globose, then lengthening to as<br />

much as 6 in. Lower bracts ovate acute, '5 in. long. Flowers<br />

bright yellow, '5 in. across. Ovary pubescent beaked. Perianthlobes<br />

oblong. Fruit I in. long, ovoid white, hairy. Seeds aciniform,<br />

ribbed with minute papillre. Hab. In woods and on banks<br />

over the whole Peninsula, very common and variable from sea<br />

level to 6700 ft. altitude.<br />

var. glabrescens Ridl. l.c. Leaves I to 1"5 ft. long, 2 to 4 in.<br />

wide; petioles 2 to 8 in. long, almost or completely glabrous.<br />

Raceme elongating to 2 in. long. Bracts lanceolate hairy. With<br />

the last, less common and more of a mountain plant. A beautiful<br />

variety with the upper side of the leaves silvery and back purple<br />

occurs at Jpoh (Curtis). Distrib. Burma, Andamans, Malay Archipelago.<br />

Native names: Lumbah; Linsubah (Pahang). Use:<br />

Fruit eaten; fibre of leaves used for fishing nets.<br />

A large tufted plant with a stout stem. Leaves oblong-Ianceolate<br />

acuminate, glabrous, 20 in. long, 3 in. wide; petioles 8 in.<br />

long. Peduncle 4 in. long, tomentose. Spike cylindric-conic, 2 to<br />

4 in. long. Flower I in. across. Sepals lanceolate acute, dirty<br />

yellow. Petals bright yellow. Ovary hairy beaked. Fruit 2 in.<br />

long, club-shaped, white. Seeds very numerous, angled ribbed.<br />

Hab. Rare. In dense forest at 2000 to 3000 ft. altitude. Perak,<br />

Thaiping Hills (Ridley).<br />
