Creeping herbs with few ovate or lanceolate petioled leaves.<br />

Flowers rather large racemed white. Upper sepal ad nate to petals<br />

forming a large ovate hood, laterals oblong-ovate spreading. Lip<br />

saccate at base adnate to base and sides of column, terminal lobe<br />

broad oblong bilobed, lobes spreading. Column dilate upwards.<br />

Anther ovate acuminate. Pollinia long curved pyriform. Species 1,<br />

Malayan and Chinese.<br />

Stem 4 to 12 in. tall, fleshy. Leaves deep velvety brown with<br />

pink midrib and 2 outer veins, I to 3 in. long, '75 to 1'5 in. wide.<br />

Spike 3 to 8 in. long, white pubescent. Ovary and pedicel white<br />

woolly, '75 in. long. Flowers fragrant. Lip twisted, side-lobes short<br />

erect, base with 2 small glands, terminal lobes divaricate. Anther<br />

yellow. Hab. On bare rocks, sometimes in great masses. Johor<br />

Pulau Tiuman; Pulau Aor; Pulau Tinggi. Penang Hill (Wallich) ;<br />

Pulau Betong (Curtis). Kelantan, Gunong, Kota Bharu. Setul,<br />

Bukit Rajah Wang in great masses. Dislrib. Tenasserim, Cochin<br />

var. Ordiana Williams. Leaf green with golden veins.<br />

var. OtletfE, H. OtletfE Rolfe, Ill. Hart. xxxviii. 31, pl. 124, with<br />

narrow lanceolate leaves dark purple.<br />

var. Dawsoniana H. Dawsoniana Bot. Mag. t. 7486. Leaves<br />

broad dark purple reticulate with gold.<br />

All these varieties grow together, except var. Ordzana, which occurs more<br />

rarely, on Pulau Aor. The type is a rather small· leaved state With plain<br />

purple brown leaves. It is often cultivated in gardens, and IS known to the<br />

Malays as Daun Low (after Sir Hugh Low).<br />

97. ZEUXINE, Lindl.<br />

Terrestrial herbs ascending. Leaves linear-Ianceolate to ovate.<br />

Flowers small spicate. Sepals sub-equal, upper one forming a hood<br />

with the petals. Lip adnate to column, saccate with calli inside tip,<br />

broad more or less bilobed. Column very short with lamellar or<br />

conic processes in front. Stigmas 2 distinct. Pollinia pyriform<br />

with an oblong disc. Species 60, tropical Asia and Africa.<br />
