102. LEPIDOGYNE, Bl.<br />

A large stout plant with thick creeping stem and long sessile<br />

linear acuminate leaves. Scape tall covered with sheaths. Spike<br />

long and dense with long linear bracts. Flowers small pink. Upper<br />

sepal adnate to petals. Lip saccate, base adnate to column with<br />

several short processes inside, side-lobes short, terminal lobe linear.<br />

Column short; rostellum deeply bifid, lobes linear. Anther elongate<br />

lanceolate acuminate. Pollinia pear-shaped narrowed into caudicles,<br />

a narrow linear disc. Species 3, Malayan.<br />

spicate portion I ft. long. Flowers very numerous. Sepals<br />

Hab. Local in woods. Johor, Pulau Kukub in the peat-woods<br />

(Ridley). Penang, Mt. Elvira (Curtis). Distnb. Lingga, Sumatra,<br />

Java, Phtlippines.<br />

In the peat-woods the ground is completely composed for a depth of<br />

20 ft or more of decaying leaves and sticks with hardly a trace of mmeral<br />

matter.<br />

103. STEREOSANDRA, Bl.<br />

Leafless slender saprophyte with swollen tuberous rhizome.<br />

Flowers secund pendulous. Bracts linear-Ianceolate. Pedicels<br />

short. Sepals and petals similar connivent. Lip as long and similar,<br />

entire with two round cushions at base. Column very short.<br />

Anther large. Pollinia elongate pyriform. No rostellum. Stigma<br />

transversely oblong on a distinct short style. Capsule elliptic.<br />

Species I or 2, Malayan, Siam.<br />

Rhizome '5 to '75 in. long, '36 in. through, ringed. Stem IS in.<br />

long, pale with 4 or 5 sheaths. Flowers about 10 distant on purple<br />

pedicels. Sepals and petals '35 in. long, acuminate. All white<br />

with black-violet tips. Lip white, edges sinuate and tip deep blackviolet.<br />

Anther with 2 violet blotches. Capsule elliptic, '25 in.<br />

long. Hab. In woods very scarce and difficult to find. Singapore,<br />

Bukit Panjang on banks of a stream. Johor, near Castlewood<br />

(Ridley). Negri Sembilan (Williams). Perak, Temengoh. Penang<br />

Hill (Curtis). Distrib. Malay Isles.<br />

Terrestrial herbs with woolly roots. Leaves basal, I or 2, longpetioled.<br />
