Herbs with fascicled or tuberous roots. Leaves grassy or terete.<br />

Scapes leafless. Flowers panicled or racemose or urn belled. Sepals<br />

lanceolate, green. Petals blue and fringed. Stamens 6, shorter<br />

than sepals; anthers linear basifixed. Ovary small, globose;<br />

style filiform. Capsule globose dehlscing from top. Seeds subglobose,<br />

2 in a cell. Species r9, all Australian but r, in China and<br />

Philippines and r Malay Peninsula.<br />

Leaves terete glaucous, green, 8 in. long, very slender. Scapes<br />

ro in. tall, 'r in. through. Flowers about 6 or 7 in a terminal<br />

umbel; pedicels'5 in. long. Sepals lanceolate-oblong blunt, '12 in.<br />

long. Petals as long, oblong-Ianceolate, blue with white central<br />

bar. Stamens half as long as sepals; filaments very short. Capsule<br />

'25 in. long. Hab. Setul, on sandy heaths, rare (Ridley).<br />

Stems 6 to 8 ft. tall, flattened. Leaves flaccid glaucous, linear<br />

acuminate unarmed. Panicle not peduncled. Bracts lanceolate<br />

leafy. Flowers white. Sepals oblong blunt. Petals wider.<br />

Stamens shorter; filaments linear flat, half as long as the long<br />

linear blunt anther, the base of which IS shortly bifid. Style<br />

cylindric, as long as petals. Berry oblong. Seeds 4 in a cell,<br />

ellipsoid. Species r, Java, Borneo, Sumatra, Philippines.<br />

Stems several, tall. Leaves sub-coriaceous, 1 ft. long, '5 in.<br />

wide. Panicle wide, spreading, 3 to 6 in. long, leafy with broad<br />

bracts to the base; branches 3 in. long. Flowers '75 in. across;<br />

pedicels slender, '5 in. long. Berry oblong, '5 in. long. Seeds<br />

'r in. long. Hab. On rocky spots in streams at high altitudes.<br />

Pahang, Gunong Tahan, Teku River, at 5600 to 6000 ft. altitude<br />

(Ridley). Perak, Gunong Kerbau (Haniff, Robinson).<br />

7. DIANELLA, Lam.<br />

Herbs with a short stem and distichous linear leaves. Scapes<br />

tall, panicled. Flowers small, blue or white, nodding pedicels<br />

pointed at top. Sepals and petals narrow recurved. Stamens,<br />

filaments thick, anthers basifixed opening by pores. Ovary<br />

3-celled; ovules 4 to 8 in a cell; style filiform; stigma minute.<br />

Berry blue or white. Seeds few ovoid fiat, black. Species about 10,<br />

chiefly A ustralian and Polynesian.<br />
