Sumatra, Java, Borneo.<br />

Branched shrub. Leaves crowded at branch ends, stiff coriaceous<br />

ensiform, acuminate, IS in. long, I in. wide. Panicle large,<br />

spreading, branches numerous pubescent. Flowers '12 in. long,<br />

yellowish white, sub-sessile. Perianth turbinate, lobes oblong,<br />

free nearly to base. Stamens shorter; filaments red. Fruit '12 in.<br />

long, globose red, I-seeded. Hab. On limestone rocks in the north.<br />

Setul, Bukit Rajah Wang (Ridley, Curtis). Distrib. South Siam.<br />

DOUBTFUL SPECIES<br />

D. JACKIANA Wall. Cat. 1545, Penang, Jack.<br />

I have seen nothing exactly matching this. It seems to be a robust plant<br />

with elliptic cuspidate leaves 9 in. long, 2 in. wide, narrowed into a broad<br />

winged petiole. The panicle is very incomplete and the flowers are only in<br />

young bud, in tufts of 2 or 3. It has been variously referred to D. longtfolia<br />

Ridl., D. pachyphylla Hook. fil, D. termflora Hook. fil. (i e. umbratica) and<br />

aurantiaca, Wall. and it is quite pOSSIble it is an abnormal specimen of the<br />

last named.<br />

12. DISPORUM, Salisb.<br />

Herbs. Roots creeping. Stem erect angled. Leaves sessile or<br />

nearly so, thin, strong-nerved. Flowers in terminal or axillary<br />

umbels; pedicels slender decurved. Perianth campanulate, lobes<br />

saccate or spurred at base. Stamens 6; anthers dorsifixed extrorse.<br />

Ovary 3-celled. Style long or short. Stigmas 3. Ovules 2 to 6<br />

in a cell. Berry pea-shaped, black or blue. Seeds sub-globose.<br />

Species about 12, Asia and North America.<br />

Stem 2 to 4 ft. tall, branched. Leaves lanceolate acuminate,<br />

4 in. long, I to 2 in. wide; petioles '12 in. long. Flowers 4 or 6<br />

in an umbel; peduncles·s to I in. long; pedicels I to I'S in. long.<br />

Sepals and petals '5 in. long, lanceolate-oblong, cuspidate, saccate<br />

at base, greenish tinted red. Stamens half as long; filaments<br />

broad, flat, as long as anthers. Berry dark blue, 1- to 3-seeded.<br />

Hab. Rare in sandy woods. Pahang, Telom (Ridley). Distrib.<br />

India, Java, Sumatra, China.<br />

Our form is the variety multl/lorum.<br />

13. GLORIOSA, Linn.<br />

Herbs. Rhizome tuberous, stem climbing by the tips of the<br />

leaves. Flowers large, yellow, becoming red. Petals and sepals<br />

linear undulate. Stamens with long filaments; anthers versatile;<br />

style long bent at an angle with the ovary. Fruit capsular. Species<br />

4 or 5, chiefly African.
