Fleshy herbs, aquatic or terrestrial, large, with creeping rhizomes.<br />

Leaves fleshy ensiform or lanceolate. Panicles spreading, branches<br />

in half whorls, bracteate. Flowers small green or yellow. Sepals<br />

and petals sub-equal orbicular or ovate. Stamens 5 or 6, filiform,<br />

base broad. PistiIlode small. Female. Pistil ovoid or lobed;<br />

stigmas 3, flat. Ovary 3-celled. Fruit fleshy, I-seeded. Species 2<br />

or 3, Ceylon and Malaya.<br />

Tall aquatic plant with long floating stolons. Stem I in.<br />

through, creeping. Leaves 6 ft. long, 6 in. wide, sword-shaped,<br />

glabrous Panicle 2 ft. long, 8 in. across or more, much branched.<br />

Bracts lanceolate, 8 in. long. Flowers greenish yellow, sessile.<br />

Berry fusiform, usually I-seeded. Hab. In ponds and rivers, very<br />

local, Malacca (Griffith), probably extinct. Perak, Lahat and along<br />

the railway in swamps, Kinta Valley, abundant (Ridley). Distrib.<br />

Java, Sumatra, and Ceylon. Natwe name: Bakung.<br />

Stems short, a few inches to 2 to 3 ft. long. Leaves slightly<br />

cobwebby beneath, lanceolate acuminate, 12 to 50 in. long, 2 to<br />

4 in. wide; petioles channelled, 3 to 12 in. long. Panicles I to 2 ft.<br />

long; branches stiff, 2 to 6 in. long, tomentose with leafy bracts.<br />

Flowers sessile. Male panicles slender, branched. Sepals 2 or 3,<br />

orbicular. Petals 3, oblong-lanceolate. Female panicles stouter.<br />

Sepals gibbous at base. Petals much longer. Stigmas 3, short.<br />

Fruit pink turning black, fleshy, globose or oblique, '25 in. through,<br />

or as big as cherries. Seed I, flattened. Hab. Common in forests<br />

in damp spots to 4500 ft. altitude. Singapore, Bukit Timah; Selitar.<br />

Johor, Kwala SediIi (Kelsall). Pahang, Gunong Tahan at 4000 ft.<br />

altitude. Malacca, Batu Tiga. Selangor, Kwala Lumpur. Negi<br />

Sembilan, Gunong Talan; Bukit Sulu (Cantley). Perak, Gunong<br />
