A fleshy white saprophyte 3 to 6 in. tall; rhiwme tuberous.<br />

Leaves lanceolate scale-like scattered on stem. Flowers 5 or 6<br />

clustered on the tip of the stem, erect, white, ·25 in. long, not<br />

winged. Sepals yellow, ovate obtuse. Petals smaller. Capsule<br />

elliptic, ·25 in. long. Seeds oval, nodulose. Hab. In damp swampy<br />

forest buried for half its length in decayed leaves. Not rare, but<br />

sporadic. Flowers scented like cowslips. Singapore, Bukit Timah ;<br />

Changi. Malacca, Sungei Hudang (Hervey); Mt. Ophir. Selangor,<br />

Petaling. Kedah Peak (Ridley). Distrib. Borneo.<br />

Fleshy saprophyte, 2 to 6 in. tall; rhizome thick, over 2 in.<br />

long, covered with ovate scales. Leaves lanceolate acuminate, ·12 to<br />

·25 in. long. Flowers 4 or 5, white crowded, terminal ·5 in. long,<br />

tube cylindric, not winged. Sepals ovate, ·12 in. long. Petals very<br />

small terete. Capsule globose. Hab. Rare. In damp woods<br />

deeply buried in decaying leaves. Selangor, forests by Labu River<br />

(Ridley). Distrib. Ceylon.<br />

2. GYMNOSIPHON, BI.<br />

Slender saprophytes with scale-like leaves and small flowers in<br />

raceme or cyme. Perianth tube cylindric, not winged. Sepals<br />

broad. Petals small or absent. Stamens 3, oblong, sessile near<br />

the mouth of the tube, connective broad, no appendages. Style<br />

trifid. Ovary unilocular. Capsule oblong or globose crowned with<br />

persistent lower half of the tube. Seeds sub-globose rugose.<br />

Species 12, chiefly S. American, 1 African· and 2 or 3 Malayan.<br />

Stem wiry, branched, 4 to 5 in. tall. Leaves ovate or lanceolate<br />

blunt few. Flowers few very delicate, pale violet, ·25 in. long on<br />

slender pedicels, tube short. Sepals ovate. Petals minute linearlanceolate.<br />

Capsule cylindric, reticulate below, crowned by the<br />

enlarged perianth-tube. Seeds elliptic-ovoid, dark brown, ribbed.<br />

Hab. In damp woods, common all over the Peninsula but sporadic.<br />

Singapore, Bukit Timah. Johor, Batu Pahat (Kelsall). Malacca,<br />

Bukit Sadanen. Pahang, Taka Tahan. Selangor, Petaling. Perak,<br />

Gunong Batu Putih (Wray); Tapah. Kedah Peak (Ridley).<br />

Distrib. Sumatra, Borneo to Papua.
