Whole plant 8 to 18 in. tall, roots tuberous. Leaves 2 or 3 at<br />

base of stem, lanceolate or elliptic-Ianceolate acute. Spike 6 to 9 in.<br />

long. Flowers small appressed, fragrant, white. Upper sepal<br />

ovate; laterals falcate oblong blunt, nearly '25 in. long. Petals<br />

oblong-Ianceolate shorter. Lip short broad with 3 short blunt<br />

lobes, central one longest, rarely central shortest, spur very short,<br />

conic pointed green. Hab. Common on roadsides and grassy open<br />

spots. Singapore, Tanglin; Jurong. Johor, Castlewood. Malacca,<br />

Sungei Ujong (Derry); Nyalas. Penang Hill. Distrib. Mergui,<br />

Tavoy, N. India, Sumatra, Lingga, Java, Borneo, Hongkong.<br />

228. Whole plant 5 to 12 in. tall or It.ss, very slender, tubers oblong.<br />

Leaves basal, 3 or 4, lanceolate acute, 1'5 to 2'25 in. long, '5 in.<br />

wide. Stem slender, 3 to 6 in. long. Raceme lax, 1'5 in. long,<br />

of very small green flowers. Sepals oblong-ovate. Petals elliptic<br />

oblong shorter. Lip trifid with a short claw, side-lobes filiform<br />

nearly 2, midlobe much shorter, spur as long as sepals, bifid.<br />

Hab. Mountains on banks, not common. Malacca, Mt. Ophir.<br />

Penang Hill, near the Crag Hotel (Ridley). Kedah Peak (Haniff).<br />

Herbs usually terrestrial. Leaves radical often tessellate.<br />

Scape I or 2 (or many) flowered. Flowers large. Sepals spreading,<br />

laterals connate beneath the lip. Petals free usually narrower<br />

and longer. Lip sessile, lateral lobes inflexed, short, midlobe large<br />

saccate. Column short terete; anthers 2 globose with a large disclike<br />

staminode between and covering them. Stigma round, discshaped.<br />

Capsule long and narrow, elliptic.<br />

Distrib. Tropical Asia, about 30 species, N. and E. India, Malay<br />

Isles to China.<br />

Terrestrial. Leaves oblong tessellate herbaceous.<br />

Petals as broad as petals not warted; flowers white (I) P. niveum<br />

Petals narrower than sepals; flowers purple and<br />

green and white.<br />

Edges warted with hairs on warts; upper sepal<br />
