Stem slender. Leaves ovate-lanceolate cordate acuminate,<br />

5 to 7 in. long, 1'5 to 3 in. wide; nerves 5 to 10. Flowers '25 in.<br />

long, lobes linear. Fruit 10 in. long, '75 to I in. through. Hab.<br />

Selangor, Batu Caves, climbing on bushes, very rare (Ridley).<br />

Distrib. Borneo.<br />

Slender climbers with large tubers. Stems branched smooth,<br />

winged, or thorny. Leaves opposite or alternate entire or digitately<br />

3- to 5-foliate with 3 to 9 veins on each leaflet. Flowers<br />

green, very small in spikes or racemes pendulous unisexual. Male<br />

flower, perianth-lobes short rotate. Stamens 6 or 3 perfect only,<br />

at base of segments. Female flower, perianth as in male. Staminodes<br />

3 to 6. Style short or 0; stigmas 3 linear, entire or bifid;<br />

ovary 3-angled, 3-celled; ovules 2 in a cell. Capsule 3-winged,<br />

loculicidal. Seeds flat winged. Species 150, all warm parts of<br />

the world.<br />
