numerous, orange with red lip. Bracts lanceolate acute, caducous,<br />

1'5 in. long. Pedicels with ovaries '25 in. long. Sepals and<br />

petals ovate-Ianceolate acute, '5 in. long. Lip as long, adnate to<br />

column base, side-lobes waved erect, blunt, midlobe oblong acute,<br />

spur '25 in. long, slender, tip hooked. Hab. In low wet woods to<br />

2000 ft. altitude. Singapore (Wallich), Bukit Timah; Selitar.<br />

johor, Kwala Tebing Tinggi; Gunong Pulai (Ridley). Perak,<br />

Maxwell's Hill (Wray). Distrtb. Sumatra.<br />

Formerly very abundant m Singapore, but largely extermmated by forest<br />

destruction. :<br />

Leaf I, ovate acute slightly narrowed at base, 6 to 7 in. long,<br />

3 in. wide; petiole 3 to 6 in. long. Scape lateral, 7 to 9 in. tall,<br />

glabrous. Flowers 4 to 5, nodding. Bracts lanceolate acuminate,<br />

'12 in. long. Ovary and pedicel nearly I in. long. Sepals and<br />

petals ovate cuspidate, '5 in. long, rosy. Lip 3-lobed, side-lobes<br />

oblong acute, midlobe narrow spathulate bilobed lobes rounded, spur<br />

very short straight. Fruit elliptic, base narrowed, I in. long.<br />

Hab. Very rare. Mountain woods at 4000 ft. altItude. Pahang,<br />

Telom (2 plants only seen) (Ridley).<br />

The pendent flowers do not expand, and it appears to be self-fertilised.<br />

Stems ascending leafy, I ft. tall or more. Leaves glabrous<br />

elliptic lanceolate narrowed at both ends acuminate, 5 or 6 on a<br />

stem, 7 in. long, 1'5 in. wide. Scape lateral, 2 ft. tall, slender<br />

pubescent. Flowers about 15, distant. Bracts linear caducous;<br />

pedicel and ovary pubescent, 1'25 in. long. Sepals and petals<br />

narrow linea,.- acuminate, white, '5 to '75 in. long. Lip oblong,<br />

'25 in. long, side-lobes lanceolate acuminate, yellow, midlobe longer<br />

oblong, crisped, tip wider rounded retuse, 2 velvety patches on<br />

disc, no spur. Column free from lip. Hab. Mountains, Kedah<br />

Peak, at 3800 ft. altitude (Robinson and Kloss). Distrib. Indo-<br />

China. '<br />

Our form has a much more pubescent inflorescence than the Indian one,<br />

and the side-lobes of the lip are more acummate. The flowers of the Indian<br />

form are usually yellOWish green. A very abnormal species of the genus.<br />

Epiphytic or rock plants; pseudobulbs large conic grey. Leaves<br />

appearing before flowers on the top of the pseudobulb, several<br />

broad lanceolate herbaceous. Scape tall, hairy from side of the<br />

leafless pseudobulb. Flowers numerous, at the apex pink or white.<br />

Bracts conspicuous. Sepals and petals broad, lanceolate spreading.<br />

Lip 3- or 4-lobed, adnate to column at base, spurred, no callus.
