on leafless stems 3- to 6-flowered; 3 to 3'5 in. wide. Sepals and
petals oblong, undulate and twisted, rose lilac; mentum conic.
Lip sub-saccate, limb orbicular erose pubescent and ciliate, light
yellow. Hab. Rare. Penang. A large clump at Balik Pulau
(Haniff). Distrib. Burma, S. Siam.
Often cultivated, possibly a garden escape.
10. BULBOPHYLLUM, Thouars.
Epiphytes with creeping rhizome and one jointed pseudobulb.
Leaf one, sub-terminal on the pseudobulb coriaceous, oblanceolate,
ovate or lineate. Flowers one to many in a raceme, peduncled from
the rhizome close to the pseudobulb. Sepals lanceolate, similar,
or laterals larger. Petals smaller. Lip fleshy curved or flat,
tongue-shaped movable on the end of the column foot. Column
short, thick, with a long curved foot to which the lateral sepals
are usually adnate, arms short or long erect, entire or bifid. Anther
conic or flat. Pollinia 2 to 4 ovoid or elliptic in unequal pairs.
Species about 400, all tropics.
§ I. Sestochzlus. Flowers large, solitary (rarely 2 or more) on a long
peduncle, spreading. Sepals sub-equal; petals nearly as large.
