Stems tall, leafy. Leaves distichous, narrow acuminate. Flowers<br />

large in a pendulous terminal short raceme large white (or purple).<br />

Bracts nearly as long as flowers, persistent. Sepals and petals<br />

narrow acuminate. Lip convolute spurred, margm fimbriate.<br />

Column tall, no foot. Pollinia 8, two outer pairs longer than<br />

inner ones. Species 4 or 5, Indian, Siamese and Chinese.<br />

Stems 18 in. tall or more, fleshy, glaucous. Leaves linearlanceolate<br />

acuminate glaucous, 6 in. long, I in. wide. Raceme<br />

3 in. long. Flowers 4 to 8. Bracts 1'5 to 2 in. long, narrow boatshaped.<br />

Sepals and petals oblong-Ianceolate acuminate, 2'5 to<br />

3'5 in. long, white. Lip much shorter, white with purple pink<br />

veins, edge crisped fimbriate. Column long, straight, wings rather<br />

large. Hab. Setul, Bukit Rajah Wang (Haniff). Distrib. Sikkim,<br />

Burma, Siam.<br />

Terrestrial woody herbs with narrow grassy leaves. Flowers<br />

showy in a short simple or sparingly branched terminal raceme.<br />

Bracts ovate persistent. Sepals lanceolate. Petals wider. Lip<br />

3-lobed convolute round column, midlobe round, crisped, 2 or more<br />

raised nerves on disc. Column tall dilate above winged; anther<br />

helmet-shaped. Pollinia 8, in pairs on a disc. Capsule oblong.<br />

Species 5 or 6; Indo-Malaya, China.<br />

Stems 3 to 7 ft. tall. Leaves linear acuminate, 2 to 8 in. long,<br />

'3 to '5 in. wide. Raceme not or rarely branched, 6 to 8 in. long,<br />

few-flowered. Bracts ovate acuminate. Flowers very large; pedicel<br />

I in. long. Sepals lanceolate rose pink, I in. 'long. Petals broader,<br />

1'75 in. long, I in. wide, ovate cuspidate. Lip as long, deep pink<br />

(not yellow in centre), kecIs on lip 3. Capsule 3 in. long. Hab.<br />

Rocky spots in mountains, especially in gravelly islands in streams.<br />

Common. Johor, Gunong Janeng (Kelsall); Endau River. Pahang,<br />

Tahan River; Gunong Tahan (Ridley). Malacca, Mt. Ophir (all<br />

collectors). Perak, Gunong Kerbau (Robinson); Batang Padang<br />

valley (Wray). Dzstrzb. Himalayas.<br />

The lowland and gravelly island forms have often smaller flowers with<br />

occasIOnally some yellow in the lip and narrower leaves. The Ophir and<br />

Kerbau flowers are very large and deep coloured.
