Short stems. Leaves ovate acute inrequilateral, 3 to 6 in. long,<br />

lanceolate, '5 to I in. long, silky. Flowers very 5mall. Ovary<br />

silky. Calyx lobes lanceolate, '1 in. long. Corolla tub_e '05 in.<br />

long, lobes '2 in. long. Fruit globose sparsely hairy. Seeds 2,<br />

outer face convex with 5 rows of 4 warts. Hab. Woods. Not<br />

common. Pahang, Kwala Tembeling; Pulau Tawar. Selangor,<br />

Batu Caves. Perak, Ipoh. Kelantan, Glam wood, Kota Bharu<br />

2. STACHYPHRYNIUM, Schum.<br />

Stems numerous. Leaves elliptic long-petioled. Inflorescence<br />

simply spicate, rarely branched on a rhizome. Bracts imbricate.<br />

Flowers in pairs in the bracts enclosed in a thin bracteole. Calyx<br />

lobes narrow. Corolla tube longer, lobes oblong white. Petaloid<br />

stamen :>hort cucullate. Lip oblong or ovate with a narrow crest.<br />

Capsule oblong, 2- or 3-seeded. Seed oblong, aril irregular or<br />

of two long claw-shaped processes. Species 8, Indo-Malayan.<br />

Very large tufted plant. Leaves erect; petioles 3 ft. long or<br />

more, blade oblong, glaucous beneath, 2 ft. long, 6 in. wide. Spikes<br />

4 to 6 in. long, 3 in. wide, flattened. Bracts whitish, edges connate,<br />

tip recurved. Flowers small fragrant. Capsule I in. long,<br />

fawn colour. Seeds 2. Hab. Common in rocky forest. Singapore,<br />

Bukit Timah; Bukit Mandai. Johor, Gunong Pantai; Batu<br />

Pabat. Malacca, Ching (Griffith); Bukit Bruang. Negri Sembilan,<br />

Tampin Hill (Goodenough). Pahang, Tahan River.<br />
