Stem climbing on bushes, 4 to 10 ft. tall. Leaves 6 to 8 in.<br />

long, narrow. Flowers solitary on pedicels 4 to 6 in. long, 3 to 4 in.<br />

across, base of petals yellow two-thirds red, finally all red. Petals<br />

and sepals crisped. Hab. Sandy open places, very doubtfully wild<br />

here, but it sometimes establishes itself from cultivation. It is<br />

poisonous. Malacca, Tanjong Kling" apparently wild" (Maingay).<br />

Distrib. Africa, India, Cambodia, Malay islands.<br />

Climbing, rarely erect, shrubs often thorny. Leaves alternate,<br />

rarely opposite, ovate or lanceolate reticulate, coriaceous, 3- to<br />

5-nerved; petiole often with 2 tendrils at base. Flowers unisexual<br />

small umbeIIed, green or yellow. Sepals and petals 3 each.<br />

Stamens 6 from base of perianth, filaments filiform or short, rarely<br />

none. Staminodes in female flowers 3 or 6. Style short or 0;<br />

stigmas 3. Berry with 1, 2 or 3 globose or hemispheric seeds.<br />

Species about 200, all tropics and some in temperate regions.<br />
