Stem tall glabrous. Leaves oblong-Ianceolate cuspidate narrowed<br />

to the base glabrous, 15 in. long, 3 in. wide; petioles slender,<br />

'5 in. long, ligule shorter, top round. Spikes obconic shortpeduncled,<br />

3 in. long, glabrous. Bracts smooth chartaceous oblong,<br />

tip round, upper ones with a short mucro, lower ones I in. long,<br />

·6 in. wide. Calyx tubular truncate, glabrous, '5 in. long. Corolla<br />

tube cylindric, silky hairy, I in. long, lobes oblong white. Lip<br />

broadly obovate, clawed, I in. wide, yellow inside, veined red at<br />

base. Stamen I in. long, no crest, but 2 elongate curved linear<br />

arms. Hab. Kelantan, Chaning Woods (Ridley).<br />

(4) A. spicewn Ridl.<br />

Plant forming a very large tuft of slender leafy sterns 6 ft. tall.<br />

Leaves narrow linear-oblong acuminate, base narrowed, 18 in. long,<br />

I in. wide; ligules oblong, rounded adnate to petiole, edges ciliate,<br />

'3 in. long. Spikes linear-oblong, 7 to 8 in. long, on a peduncle I in.<br />

long; rachis velvety. Flowers single, enclosed in three papery<br />

lanceolate acuminate bracts 1'25 in. long and with a long lanceolate<br />

dry papery outer bract 2 in. long, '3 in. wide, all distant<br />

imbricating. Calyx spathaceous, split in front, 1'5 in. long, buff.<br />

Corolla tube as short. Upper lobe broad oblong, 1'5 in. long, blunt,<br />

lower ones linear, red. Lip large obovate entire yellow finely<br />

punctate, red on both sides. Anther oblong, with a crest of two<br />

long curved arms, and a very short median process. Hab. Dense<br />

mountain forests. Negri Sembilan, Bukit Tangga (Ridley);<br />

Gunong Angsi (Holttum).<br />

This is very unlike any other species in its drawn-out spike of long papery<br />

bracts, and has more of the appearance of a Geostachys.<br />

Stems pubescenti 12 to 15 ft. tall. Leaves oblong-Ianceolate<br />

pubescent beneath, I ft. long, 2 in. wide. Spikes I in. long, 2'5 in.<br />

through, sub-globose on peduncles 1'5 in. long. Bracts bilobed,<br />

'5 in. long, pubescent. Corolla ochreous, upper lobe obovate<br />

hooded, laterals narrower lanceolate. Lip I in. across, obovate<br />

convolute, yellow, spotted red. Filament broad pale orange,<br />

anther-crest reniform. Hab. Penang Waterfall and Penara Bukit<br />

(Curtis). Distrib. Sumatra.<br />

Stems 6 ft. tall. Leaves oblong-Ianceolate cuspidate glabrous,<br />

18 in. long, 4 in. wide. Spikes cylindric, gradually elongating,<br />

rachis tomentose. Bracts oblong bifid, red, 1'5 in. long, I in. wide.<br />

Calyx tube I in. long, red. Corolla as long, lobes linear, 'S in. long.<br />

lobes linear, '5 in. long, .ochre yellow. Lip obovate round bilobed.<br />

Staminodes minute. Anther crest small round. Fruit oblong,<br />

'75 in. long, covered with conic subulate spines; pedicel '75 in. long.
