Rhizome short, stout. Leafy stems, 27 in. tall, slender, glabrous.<br />

Leaves oblong-Ianceolate, long acuminate, thin, base gradually<br />

narrowed, 6 in. long, 1·25 in. wide; petioles very short or none.<br />

Flowers with the leaves in basal spikes 1 in. long; peduncle ·25 in.<br />

long. Bracts lower ones ovate, upper ones lanceolate, ·5 in. long,<br />

reddish white. Calyx slender tubular spathaceous split on one side,<br />

more than half-way with 3 small points. Corolla tube 2 in. long,<br />

slender, lobes lanceolate acute thin white, 1 in. long. Staminodes<br />

lanceolate acute as long but broader white. Lip large obovate<br />

bilobed, violet veined with white. Anther white hairy. Hab.<br />

Mountain forests, Negri Sembilan, Bukit Tangga (Napier, Ridley).<br />

Has erect lanceolate leaves I ft. long and beautifully marbled<br />

dark green and grey and purple beneath. The flowers appear when<br />

the leaves have died down, on a short thick scape, and are large<br />

and showy, lilac with purple on the lip. Native name: Kunchur.<br />

Valued as a spice and occasionally cultivated.<br />

6. GASTROCHILUS, Wall.<br />

Small herbs with rhizome. Stems short or long or none. Leaves<br />

lanceolate or ovate petioled, erect solitary or 3 or 4 in a tuft. Spikes<br />

axillary or from the rhizome; bracts numerous. Flowers thin<br />

opening singly white, yellow or red. Calyx tubular spathaceous.<br />

Corolla tube long and slender lobes oblong or lanceolate. Staminodes<br />

similar or larger. Lip oblong or obcuneate usually saccate or<br />

convolute, entire lobed. Stamen filament thick fleshy; anther<br />

oblong, crest rounded or lobed or o. Species about 30, Indo­<br />

Malaya, Siam.<br />
