violet or white tinted violet, 9 in. wide, persistent and pendent on<br />

pubescent rachis after fall of flower. Male flowers 6 in a row,<br />

I in. long, white. Calyx oblong, 2 outer teeth longest. Corolla<br />

'75 in. long. Females 6 in a row. Fruit green, 3 in. long, I in.<br />

through, angled. Seeds '25 in. long, cylindric, truncate not angled.<br />

Hab. Common, growing with M. malaccensis in great plenty.<br />

Pahang, Tahan woods; Kwala Lipis (Machado). Negri Sembilan,<br />

Linsum. Selangor, Kwala Lumpur; Ginting Sempah. Perak,<br />

Thaiping Hills; Sungei Siput (Burkill). Temengoh; Batang<br />

Padang Valley (Ridley).<br />

M. sp. A dwarf plant. Leaves lanceolate acuminate blunt<br />

mucronulate, 2 ft. long, 5 to 6 in. wide; petioles rather slender.<br />

Fruits cylindric solitary short pedicelled, 3 in. long, erect, few,<br />

about 6, white with longitudinal violet bands, slightly angled. Seeds<br />

oblong; peduncle 8 in. long. Hab. Johor, Gunong Pulai; Tempayan<br />

River (Ridley).<br />

I have twice seen this curious species, but only in fruit.<br />

Erect herbs with leafy stems bearing a terminal raceme or<br />

panicle of medium or small flowers white or yellow. Perianth<br />

superior of 3 sepals and 3 petals, Ianceolate cuspidate. Stamens 3,<br />

or one aborted. Anthers dorsifixed; filaments connate below.<br />

Style cylindric. Stigma capitate. Ovary triquetrous, 3-celled.<br />

Fruit capSUlar, rarely baccate. Seeds minute. Species about 10,<br />

Malayan.<br />

Herbs with erect or creeping stems. Leaves numerous plicate,<br />

lanceolate. Flowers racemose. Bracts long. Sepals and petals<br />

equal and similar. Stamens 3 fertile. Anthers linear-oblong,<br />

filaments connate for two-thirds of their length. Style stout.<br />

Fruit capsular or baccate. Species 6, Malayan, isles to Louisiades.<br />
