CXXXVII. ZINGIBERACE.E. [Zingiber.<br />

Lip 3-lobed; midlobe the longer. Stamen filament linear; anthercells<br />

linear, connective forming a long curved beak. Capsule thinwalled,<br />

three-valved. Seed black, arillate. Species 30, Indo-China,<br />

Malaya.<br />

The ginger plant .. Haliya" Zingiber officinale Rosc. is commonly cultivated<br />

in fields. It is about I ft. tall, with narrow leaves, the spike borne on<br />

a peduncle from the rhizome, rarely terminal; bracts green, flower yellow<br />

densely spotted black.<br />
