Stem woody, '5 in. through. Leaves 16 in. long, 4 in. wide,<br />
dark green; petioles 6 in. long. Spike 8 in. tall, base nude, 4-angled.<br />
Bracts ovate blunt. Flowers sessile ochre-yellow. Fruit as large<br />
as a 12-bore bullet. Hab. Very rare in dense forests at 4000 ft.<br />
altitude. Pahang, Telom and Gunong Berumbun (Ridley).<br />

Shrubby half scandent plants, often thorny. Leaves reduced<br />
to minute scales with tufts of flat or acicular branches (cladodes)<br />
in axils. Flowers very small, white, axillary fascicled, solitary or<br />
racemed. Perianth campanulate, 6-lobed. Stamens from base of<br />
perianth. Ovary 3-celled; ovules 2 or more in a cell; style 1;<br />
stigmas 3. Seeds 2 to 6, black. Species about 100. Europe,<br />
Asia, Africa.<br />

Scandent woody, spines long (cladodes), 2- to 6-nate, '75 to 1 in.<br />
long, linear acuminate falcate. Racemes solitary or fascicled<br />

through. Hab. Lankawi, on limestone rocks (Curtis), very rare.<br />

Trees or shrubs. Leaves linear sessile or lanceolate petioled.<br />
Flowers white or pink cylindric in terminal panicles or racemes.<br />
Sepals and petals linear more or less connate at base. Stamens<br />
6 from base of tube; filaments long filiform; anthers narrow<br />
versatile. Ovary 3-celled; ovules 1 in a cell. Berry globose,<br />
1- to 3-seeded. Seeds globose or hemispheric. Species about 40.<br />
Africa, Asia, Australia. The well-known "Dracrena" of gardens<br />
is Cordyline terminalis, Kunth. Enum. v. 25. It is probably of<br />
Papuan origin and is not wild here. Many varieties are in cultivation.<br />
