Table 8.6 gives an overview <strong>of</strong> the music selections used in all sessions, categorized<br />

into three types: 1. Predominantly supportive selections; 2. Selections with both<br />

supportive and challenging episodes; 3. Predominantly challenging selections.<br />

Principles for this categorization and its validation were given in the method section.<br />

The grid shows clearly – no matter whether the segmentation Sessions 1-4, 4-7, 7-10<br />

or 1-4, 5-7, 8-10 is chosen – that the use <strong>of</strong> supportive music dominates in the first<br />

(early segment), while the use <strong>of</strong> challenging music increases during the process and<br />

culminates in the third (latest) segment. There are individual differences between the<br />

six participants, however the tendency is clear.<br />

Figure 8.12 shows how the three types were distributed in each <strong>of</strong> the ten session<br />

rounds.<br />
