<strong>Teach<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, supervis<strong>in</strong>g, learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Case study 2: Explor<strong>in</strong>g student misconceptions<br />

• ‘I can’t apply to . . . because they want critical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> commercial<br />

awareness. In my course we don’t do that. It’s all research <strong>and</strong> projects.’<br />

• ‘No one tells you about what bus<strong>in</strong>esses want be<strong>for</strong>e you apply to uni. My<br />

degree just doesn’t have any use, unless you want to do research <strong>and</strong> that<br />

needs a 2.1 or first. And research is all my tutor can talk about.’<br />

Mak<strong>in</strong>g the l<strong>in</strong>k between personal reflection <strong>and</strong> workplace application is easier <strong>for</strong><br />

students who encounter personal development plann<strong>in</strong>g (PDP) <strong>in</strong> their vacation or termtime<br />

employment. Where students struggle to see the relevance of reflection, tutorial<br />

activities that beg<strong>in</strong> with <strong>in</strong>terviews with people who use personal development plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at work may be helpful (Kneale, 2007), as would ask<strong>in</strong>g students to read <strong>and</strong> reflect on<br />

Cooper <strong>and</strong> Stevens (2006).<br />

Giv<strong>in</strong>g students the opportunity to practise mak<strong>in</strong>g personal evaluative statements,<br />

be<strong>for</strong>e encounter<strong>in</strong>g them at work, is an employability skill <strong>in</strong> its own right. The lack of<br />

confidence of both students <strong>and</strong> <strong>academic</strong>s with personal development processes exists<br />

partly because they are asked to articulate <strong>in</strong> an unfamiliar language <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation about<br />

which they feel self-conscious (Case study 2). Introduc<strong>in</strong>g students from level 1 onward<br />

to the discipl<strong>in</strong>e Employability Profiles <strong>and</strong> the Skills <strong>and</strong> Attributes Maps (<strong>Higher</strong><br />

<strong>Education</strong> Academy, 2006) has the potential to develop the confidence of both students<br />

<strong>and</strong> staff <strong>in</strong> openly discuss<strong>in</strong>g these matters.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g the language<br />

To make employability l<strong>in</strong>ks clear to students, <strong>and</strong> to exp<strong>and</strong> their employability<br />

vocabulary, it is suggested that the skills <strong>and</strong> competency terms <strong>and</strong> synonyms employers<br />

use should also be used <strong>in</strong> module descriptors <strong>and</strong> outcomes. If this seems to be<br />

p<strong>and</strong>er<strong>in</strong>g to the employment agenda, it is worth remember<strong>in</strong>g that these terms are<br />

commonly used <strong>in</strong> research <strong>and</strong> <strong>academic</strong> job advertisements.<br />

Critical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Data analysis to f<strong>in</strong>d patterns <strong>and</strong> trends <strong>and</strong> draw conclusions is one aspect of critical<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g. This <strong>in</strong>volves tak<strong>in</strong>g complex <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation, break<strong>in</strong>g it down <strong>in</strong>to subunits,<br />

per<strong>for</strong>m<strong>in</strong>g statistical <strong>and</strong> other data analyses, <strong>and</strong> then reflect<strong>in</strong>g on the results. The<br />

keywords to describe these processes might <strong>in</strong>clude reason<strong>in</strong>g, logical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g, develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>sights, <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g relationships, all of which could replace the<br />

ubiquitous ‘research skills’ <strong>in</strong> a module or session descriptor.
