INTRODUCTION<br />

The first sections of this chapter consider the follow<strong>in</strong>g issues which are central to the<br />

effective learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g of modern languages <strong>in</strong> higher education (HE):<br />

• the chang<strong>in</strong>g face of language study <strong>in</strong> HE<br />

• the implications <strong>for</strong> HE language learn<strong>in</strong>g of changes at secondary level<br />

• <strong>in</strong>sights from second language acquisition research<br />

• communicative approaches to language teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• autonomous learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> learner differences<br />

• communication <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation technology (C&IT)<br />

• translation.<br />

A subsequent case study of a first-year post-A Level language course illustrates these<br />

issues <strong>in</strong> practice <strong>and</strong> provides a po<strong>in</strong>ter to how they may be <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong>to a coherent<br />

whole. The focus throughout is on language learn<strong>in</strong>g rather than the non-language<br />

elements of degree courses s<strong>in</strong>ce the latter are covered elsewhere <strong>in</strong> this volume, <strong>in</strong><br />

particular <strong>in</strong> Chapter 20.<br />

LANGUAGES IN HIGHER EDUCATION<br />

Developments <strong>in</strong> the teach<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>for</strong>eign languages over the past 40 years have resulted<br />

partly from new methodological perceptions but also from the chang<strong>in</strong>g role of the higher<br />

education <strong>in</strong>stitution (HEI) as language provider. HE language courses were once<br />
