Glossary<br />

Peer tutor/tutorial Tutorial facilitated by fellow students (peer tutors).<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance Indicator (PI) Measures of achievement of <strong>in</strong>dividuals or organisations,<br />

often expressed <strong>in</strong> terms of outputs.<br />

Personal Development Plan (PDP) A range of <strong>for</strong>mal <strong>and</strong>/or <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mal mechanisms<br />

that promote reflection by an <strong>in</strong>dividual of their learn<strong>in</strong>g, per<strong>for</strong>mance <strong>and</strong>/or<br />

achievement <strong>and</strong> that encourages planned personal, educational <strong>and</strong> career<br />

development (see also progress files).<br />

Personal epistemology A person’s beliefs about knowledge <strong>and</strong> its development;<br />

compris<strong>in</strong>g beliefs about: knowledge <strong>and</strong> know<strong>in</strong>g; knowledge construction; <strong>and</strong> the<br />

evaluation of knowledge.<br />

Personal Response System (PRS) Individualised electronic means of ‘vot<strong>in</strong>g’ (e.g.<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g preferred answer), often used <strong>in</strong> large classes.<br />

Placement/placement learn<strong>in</strong>g Plac<strong>in</strong>g students outside their home <strong>in</strong>stitution <strong>for</strong><br />

part of their period of study, often work placement <strong>in</strong> which the student ‘learns on<br />

the job’.<br />

Plagiarism Present<strong>in</strong>g others’ work as one’s own.<br />

PLE Loosely used to describe a system which allows learners to manage their own<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a more student-centred manner than is typically encountered with<strong>in</strong> VLEs.<br />

A PLE may not be a s<strong>in</strong>gle plat<strong>for</strong>m or application, but may make use of various<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegrated tools.<br />

Podcast Adigital media file (conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sound <strong>and</strong>/or video) which is distributed over<br />

the <strong>in</strong>ternet <strong>and</strong> to which users can subscribe <strong>for</strong> download <strong>and</strong> playback on computers<br />

or portable playback devices such as MP 3 players.<br />

Portfolio (teach<strong>in</strong>g portfolio) A personal collection of material represent<strong>in</strong>g an<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual’s work (e.g. to demonstrate achievement <strong>and</strong> professional development as<br />

a university teacher).<br />

Praxis Synthesis of theory <strong>and</strong> practice <strong>in</strong> which each <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>ms the other.<br />

Probation The <strong>in</strong>itial phase <strong>in</strong> employment with a new organisation <strong>in</strong> which a member<br />

of staff ‘learns the job’. In higher education, this usually <strong>in</strong>volves periods of <strong>for</strong>mal<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> development; often the probationer is supported by a mentor. Many<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions set <strong>for</strong>mal requirements that staff are expected to meet <strong>for</strong> satisfactory<br />

completion of probation.<br />

Problem class Typically a session <strong>in</strong> the teach<strong>in</strong>g of mathematics, eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

physical science <strong>in</strong> which students work through problems <strong>and</strong> derive solutions with<br />

the support of a teacher <strong>and</strong>/or tutor/demonstrator. Not to be confused with PBL<br />

sessions.<br />

Problem-based learn<strong>in</strong>g (PBL) A pedagogical method <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong> the 1960s; much<br />

used <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e. Curriculum design <strong>in</strong>volves a large amount of small group teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> claims greater alignment with sound educational pr<strong>in</strong>ciples. <strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g come after learners identify their learn<strong>in</strong>g needs from a trigger <strong>in</strong> the <strong>for</strong>m of<br />

a scenario (‘the problem’).<br />

Professional doctorates Afield of studies that is a professional discipl<strong>in</strong>e. It is a research<br />

degree with a significant taught element plus research project published as the thesis.
