PowerPo<strong>in</strong>t <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>outs<br />

Students now expect all lecturers to provide copies of the PowerPo<strong>in</strong>t presentations from<br />

their lectures, often via a departmental website or VLE (virtual learn<strong>in</strong>g environment).<br />

The concern often expressed by lecturers is that students may see h<strong>and</strong>outs, whether<br />

provided <strong>in</strong> hard copy or electronically, as a replacement <strong>for</strong> attend<strong>in</strong>g the lectures. The<br />

reality is that students may <strong>in</strong>deed th<strong>in</strong>k this, if attend<strong>in</strong>g the lecture gives them no added<br />

value over <strong>and</strong> above the PowerPo<strong>in</strong>t presentation. Aspects such as generat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>and</strong> student engagement give added value to the lecture. It is worth<br />

the lecturer mak<strong>in</strong>g it clear to students from the outset that simply tak<strong>in</strong>g the h<strong>and</strong>outs<br />

is not go<strong>in</strong>g to give them the best learn<strong>in</strong>g experience, <strong>and</strong> then lett<strong>in</strong>g their lectur<strong>in</strong>g style<br />

speak <strong>for</strong> itself.<br />

OVERVIEW<br />

Lectur<strong>in</strong>g to large groups of students is a challeng<strong>in</strong>g experience <strong>for</strong> the new lecturer. It<br />

is not sufficient to simply know the material. The lecturer needs to make the lecture<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> engag<strong>in</strong>g, well organised <strong>and</strong> structured, with clear guidance through the<br />

material, us<strong>in</strong>g relevant <strong>and</strong> topical examples <strong>and</strong> case studies. Gett<strong>in</strong>g the lecture right<br />

is a skill <strong>and</strong> can take time. The use of feedback from students <strong>and</strong> colleagues can be a<br />

start<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>for</strong> reflection on your lectur<strong>in</strong>g style, <strong>and</strong> you may wish to enhance your<br />

practice.<br />
