Case study 1: Northumbria University: criteria <strong>for</strong><br />

promotion to Chair <strong>in</strong> <strong>Teach<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

Production of a portfolio which <strong>in</strong>cludes evidence of dist<strong>in</strong>ctive, <strong>in</strong>novative <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>fluential examples of programme development, pedagogy <strong>and</strong>/or learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

enhancement both with<strong>in</strong> the university <strong>and</strong> at national level. The Appo<strong>in</strong>tments<br />

Board will take <strong>in</strong>to account all <strong>for</strong>ms of evidence <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g published works <strong>and</strong><br />

other examples of dissem<strong>in</strong>ation. Evidence should demonstrate some of the<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• The delivery of nationally recognised teach<strong>in</strong>g-related professional service to<br />

other universities <strong>and</strong> organisations.<br />

• Active <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>and</strong>/or leadership of national committees relat<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Recognition of significant adoption at national level of learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>novations orig<strong>in</strong>ally developed by the <strong>in</strong>dividual.<br />

• Keynote addresses at teach<strong>in</strong>g-related conferences.<br />

• <strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g leadership across the university.<br />

• The development of appeal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative programmes that have<br />

attracted significant numbers of students.<br />

• The development of successful corporate programmes.<br />

• The development of successful short courses.<br />

• Lead<strong>in</strong>g teach<strong>in</strong>g collaborations with other <strong>in</strong>stitutions.<br />

• Publications on teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> refereed journals, textbooks <strong>and</strong><br />

conference papers.<br />

• A substantial number of significant learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g-related grants<br />

secured on behalf of the university.<br />

Case study 2: University of Manchester: criteria <strong>for</strong><br />

promotion to Chair <strong>in</strong> <strong>Teach<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

Outst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g ability . . . will be demonstrated by <strong>academic</strong> leadership <strong>and</strong><br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>in</strong> <strong>Teach<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g contributions to the advancement<br />

of knowledge <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g or its creative or professional application <strong>in</strong> the<br />

field of learn<strong>in</strong>g at the highest level, <strong>and</strong> the ability to <strong>in</strong>fluence, stimulate <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>spire others; <strong>and</strong> outst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g achievement <strong>in</strong> contribution to student learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

as evidenced <strong>in</strong> either peer-reviewed or peer-reviewable outputs <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

excellence <strong>in</strong> practice <strong>in</strong> the field.
