Blended learn<strong>in</strong>g A mix of face-to-face <strong>and</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Blogs Websites which allow people to set up <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> an electronic journal without<br />

specialist knowledge of web design. Users can typically subscribe to them so that they<br />

are alerted to new entries.<br />

Bluepr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g (of assessment) Ensures that assessment tasks adequately sample what<br />

the student is expected to have learnt.<br />

Bologna Process A movement to br<strong>in</strong>g compatibility to degree structures that will<br />

promote recognition of qualifications outside their country of orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Broadb<strong>and</strong> Highspeed <strong>in</strong>ternet connection <strong>and</strong> transmission.<br />

Bullet<strong>in</strong> board An electronic version of the notice-board. Messages are left <strong>and</strong><br />

questions asked or answered by contribut<strong>in</strong>g to themed or ‘threaded’ discussions – also<br />

called ‘asynchronous communication’.<br />

Buzz group A small group activity, typically with<strong>in</strong> a large group, <strong>in</strong> which students<br />

work together on a short problem, task or discussion. So called because of the noise the<br />

activity generates.<br />

CAL (computer-aided learn<strong>in</strong>g) Use of computers <strong>for</strong> education <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g,<br />

sometimes referred to as computer-assisted <strong>in</strong>struction (CAI) or computer-based<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g (CBL). In this context the computer is usually used as a discrete item of<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

CALL Computer-assisted language learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

CAS Computer algebra system.<br />

Centre <strong>for</strong> Excellence <strong>in</strong> <strong>Teach<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> (CETL) HEFCE-funded centres bid <strong>for</strong><br />

by universities to promote student learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Code of <strong>Practice</strong> A ‘series of system-wide expectations’ <strong>for</strong> a range of areas (e.g.<br />

assessment) set out by the QAA.<br />

Cognitive doma<strong>in</strong> The major area of learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> most discipl<strong>in</strong>es, to do with knowledge,<br />

underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Communicative approach An approach to the teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g of languages<br />

which emphasises the primacy of mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> communication needs.<br />

Community of practice The community is made up of those who share common<br />

underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> practices (e.g. <strong>in</strong> a discipl<strong>in</strong>e) <strong>and</strong> who may extend or create<br />

knowledge by virtue of shared practices <strong>and</strong> discussion (e.g. <strong>in</strong> the case of those<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the profession).<br />

Competence Most contemporary use <strong>in</strong> education relates to per<strong>for</strong>m<strong>in</strong>g a task or series<br />

of tasks, with debate over how far such activities also require underp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g knowledge<br />

<strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g. (1) May be used generically to mean demonstrated achievement<br />

with respect to any clearly def<strong>in</strong>ed set of outcomes. (2) Is used to <strong>in</strong>dicate both a high<br />

level of achievement <strong>and</strong> a just acceptable level of activity. (3) Someth<strong>in</strong>g which a<br />

person <strong>in</strong> a given occupational area should be able to do.<br />

Computer-based learn<strong>in</strong>g See CAL.<br />

Constructive alignment Ensur<strong>in</strong>g, at least, learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes, teach<strong>in</strong>g methods,<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g activities, <strong>and</strong> assessment are compatible with each other.
