Key aspects of<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

experimental<br />

sciences<br />

This chapter draws attention to dist<strong>in</strong>ctive features of teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

experimental sciences, which primarily <strong>in</strong>clude the physical sciences <strong>and</strong> the broad<br />

spectrum of biological sciences, <strong>and</strong> it will review:<br />

• issues surround<strong>in</strong>g the context <strong>in</strong> which teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g are delivered;<br />

• teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g methods, particularly important <strong>in</strong> science;<br />

• other current teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g issues <strong>in</strong> these sciences.<br />

CONTEXT<br />

<strong>Teach<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the experimental sciences <strong>in</strong> the UK have to take account of a<br />

number of critical issues. These are:<br />

1 the extent of freedom <strong>for</strong> curriculum development <strong>and</strong> delivery;<br />

2 employer <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> course specification <strong>and</strong> delivery;<br />

3 recruitment imperatives/numbers of students;<br />

4 enhanced degrees (e.g. the M.Sci.);<br />

5 <strong>in</strong>creased participation, varied aspirations of students <strong>and</strong> differentiated learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Freedom <strong>for</strong> curriculum development <strong>and</strong> delivery<br />

In common with eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g discipl<strong>in</strong>es, with<strong>in</strong> the experimental sciences the curricula,<br />

<strong>and</strong> even learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g methods, may be partially determ<strong>in</strong>ed by professional<br />

bodies <strong>and</strong> employers. With some professional bodies, recognition or accreditation of<br />
