INTRODUCTION<br />

Manag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> ensur<strong>in</strong>g educational quality is one of the key responsibilities of<br />

educational <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>and</strong> of those who work <strong>in</strong> them. Dem<strong>and</strong>s from external agencies<br />

def<strong>in</strong>e part of what is considered to be good practice, <strong>and</strong> these dem<strong>and</strong>s comb<strong>in</strong>e with<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>e-based practices <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutional culture <strong>and</strong> requirements to set the context<br />

<strong>for</strong> lecturers.<br />

This chapter aims to offer an overview of current th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g about quality <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

from a UK perspective, <strong>and</strong> demystify some of the term<strong>in</strong>ology. The <strong>in</strong>tention is to provide<br />

a context with<strong>in</strong> which lecturers can develop their underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of quality issues <strong>in</strong><br />

higher education, <strong>and</strong> consider their roles <strong>and</strong> obligations <strong>in</strong> relation to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

enhanc<strong>in</strong>g quality <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />

DEFINITIONS AND TERMINOLOGY<br />

Def<strong>in</strong>itions <strong>and</strong> usage of term<strong>in</strong>ology about the concepts of <strong>academic</strong> ‘st<strong>and</strong>ards’ <strong>and</strong><br />

‘quality’ vary depend<strong>in</strong>g on the aims <strong>and</strong> purposes of the educational provision or<br />

country <strong>and</strong> historical context. These concepts underp<strong>in</strong> the th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>d the design,<br />

delivery, evaluation <strong>and</strong> review of educational provision. In the UK, the term ‘<strong>academic</strong><br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards’ has been described as ‘the level of achievement that a student has to reach to<br />

ga<strong>in</strong> an <strong>academic</strong> award’ (QAA, 2007).<br />
