knowledge <strong>in</strong> discussion <strong>and</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g assignments.<br />

Study skills <strong>and</strong> <strong>academic</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrity<br />

The skills <strong>and</strong> capabilities required of students <strong>in</strong> higher education are complex <strong>and</strong> vary<br />

to some extent between different subjects. Many of these skills are acquired over the<br />

whole period of study <strong>and</strong> cannot be learnt as separate <strong>and</strong> identifiable skills at the<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of a course. However, it can be valuable to <strong>in</strong>troduce some fundamental study<br />

skills, particularly when students are unfamiliar with the dem<strong>and</strong>s of study<strong>in</strong>g at higher<br />

education level. It is important that the skills are perceived by students to be timely, useful,<br />

appropriate <strong>and</strong> relevant.<br />

Study skills that are specific to higher education <strong>in</strong>clude conventions of <strong>academic</strong><br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g, styles <strong>for</strong> references <strong>and</strong> bibliographies, search<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> <strong>and</strong> select<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation<br />

<strong>in</strong> libraries <strong>and</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>ternet, note tak<strong>in</strong>g from lectures, mak<strong>in</strong>g presentations, <strong>and</strong><br />

revision <strong>and</strong> exam techniques. In order to reduce the <strong>in</strong>cidence of plagiarism, <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

importance is be<strong>in</strong>g attached to <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g students to the notion of ‘<strong>academic</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrity’<br />

<strong>and</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g them to appreciate that us<strong>in</strong>g material from sources other than their own<br />

work requires appropriate referenc<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Research has also shown that it benefits students to pay attention to their metacognitive<br />

development <strong>and</strong> belief <strong>in</strong> their own self-efficacy (Knight <strong>and</strong> Yorke, 2003). This<br />

means provid<strong>in</strong>g opportunities <strong>for</strong> students to reflect on what they know, how they are<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> how they can make a difference to their success through, <strong>for</strong> example,<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g journals, discussion <strong>and</strong> reflective writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Onl<strong>in</strong>e course h<strong>and</strong>book<br />

A component of respond<strong>in</strong>g to students’ anxieties about the course they are embark<strong>in</strong>g<br />

upon is hav<strong>in</strong>g all the <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation they need on the university’s <strong>in</strong>tranet or with<strong>in</strong> a<br />

virtual learn<strong>in</strong>g environment. This is an onl<strong>in</strong>e student h<strong>and</strong>book that can be regularly<br />

updated. It should be an important po<strong>in</strong>t of reference <strong>for</strong> students, conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g all the<br />

essential <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation they need to pursue their studies. This will <strong>in</strong>clude course structure,<br />

options <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation on credit accumulation, descriptions of modules, their content<br />

<strong>and</strong> assessment methods – typically with learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes <strong>and</strong> assessment criteria<br />

specified. It will also conta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation about teach<strong>in</strong>g staff, their availability <strong>and</strong> how<br />

to contact them; libraries <strong>and</strong> ICT facilities, location <strong>and</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g times; bibliographic<br />

<strong>and</strong> referenc<strong>in</strong>g conventions; calendar <strong>for</strong> the year with significant dates <strong>and</strong> timetable<br />

<strong>for</strong> assessments; any special regulations relat<strong>in</strong>g to laboratories, studies, field trips; <strong>and</strong><br />

support services which are available.<br />

The VLE is also a portal to the <strong>in</strong>ternet <strong>and</strong> to the library, with access to journals <strong>and</strong><br />

other materials, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g course-specific learn<strong>in</strong>g materials, a noticeboard <strong>and</strong> discussion
