Glossary<br />

L2 (of language teach<strong>in</strong>g) A second or <strong>for</strong>eign language, learnt either <strong>in</strong> the classroom<br />

or naturalistically <strong>in</strong> the country concerned.<br />

Laboratory/practical class A type of teach<strong>in</strong>g session, usually <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> curricula <strong>in</strong><br />

experimental sciences, biomedical sciences <strong>and</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g discipl<strong>in</strong>es, which is<br />

broadly <strong>in</strong>tended to offer tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> techniques <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g how to carry out<br />

experimental <strong>in</strong>vestigations.<br />

<strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Teach<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Strategy What an <strong>in</strong>stitution, or parts of it, wishes to achieve<br />

with regard to learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g; how it will achieve it <strong>and</strong> how it will know when<br />

it has succeeded.<br />

<strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> centre A centre to which students may go to ga<strong>in</strong> support <strong>for</strong> their learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(e.g. via computer-aided applications).<br />

<strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> agreement/contract A contract drawn up between teacher <strong>and</strong> learner,<br />

whereby each agrees to take on certa<strong>in</strong> roles <strong>and</strong> responsibilities (e.g. the learner to<br />

h<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> work on time <strong>and</strong> the teacher to return corrected work with<strong>in</strong> a specified period<br />

of time). May specifically concern sett<strong>in</strong>g out the learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes the learner<br />

undertakes to achieve.<br />

<strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> cycle Theory describ<strong>in</strong>g the stages of learn<strong>in</strong>g from concrete experience<br />

through reflection <strong>and</strong> generalisation to experiment towards new experience, often<br />

attributed to David Kolb.<br />

<strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> objectives See objectives.<br />

<strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> outcomes (Intended learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes (ILOs)) Statements which def<strong>in</strong>e the<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g students are expected to have acquired on completion of a session, course,<br />

programme, module or unit of study.<br />

<strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> style Used to describe how learners differ <strong>in</strong> their tendencies or preferences<br />

to learn. Recognises learn<strong>in</strong>g differences; a mix of personality <strong>and</strong> cognitive processes.<br />

Level (of award)/level descriptor Used to describe a hierarchy of learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes<br />

across all doma<strong>in</strong>s, usually L1, 2, 3, M <strong>and</strong> D. Most commonly follows classification<br />

from QAA (Framework of <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Qualifications – see web).<br />

Licens<strong>in</strong>g A term often used synonymously with accreditation, especially <strong>in</strong> Europe.<br />

May also relate to a ‘licence to practise’.<br />

Lifelong learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> from the cradle to the grave. The modern world requires<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g professional development, constant updat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> so on, irrespective of age.<br />

Universities need to consider implications <strong>for</strong> credit, flexible programmes <strong>and</strong> so on.<br />

Mentor Apeer who supports <strong>and</strong> advises a new student or member of staff, help<strong>in</strong>g him<br />
