Commercial awareness<br />

Commercial awareness essentially revolves around be<strong>in</strong>g aware of the ways <strong>in</strong> which<br />

organisations operate <strong>and</strong> people <strong>in</strong>teract with them. A commercially aware person can<br />

reflect on the possibilities <strong>and</strong> issues of bus<strong>in</strong>ess situations from a variety of perspectives.<br />

Themes <strong>in</strong>clude bus<strong>in</strong>ess plann<strong>in</strong>g, customer relationships, cash flow processes, strategic<br />

decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g, SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities <strong>and</strong> threat) analysis,<br />

advertis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g, target sett<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g the mission <strong>and</strong> aims of an<br />

organisation. Employers are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> reflection <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of the processes<br />

<strong>and</strong> approaches operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>esses where applicants have worked or been<br />

volunteer<strong>in</strong>g. Experience of many of these themes is acquired as a normal part of life,<br />

through school, student societies, clubs <strong>and</strong> so on, as <strong>in</strong> Case study 3.<br />

Case study 3: Explor<strong>in</strong>g student misconceptions<br />

Student: I’m a physics student; we do noth<strong>in</strong>g on commercial awareness.<br />

Academic: But your CV says you are a bar manager. You cash up after shifts, you<br />

collate the brewery orders. You organised club nights, recruit<strong>in</strong>g staff, do<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

promotions <strong>and</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>ances. These are all evidence of commercial experience<br />

<strong>and</strong> awareness.<br />

Personal competencies<br />

Under personal competencies, a person can talk about their motivation, energy to<br />

promote <strong>and</strong> start new <strong>in</strong>itiatives, perseverance with difficult tasks, <strong>and</strong> ensur<strong>in</strong>g tasks<br />

are completed on schedule. Keywords might <strong>in</strong>clude self-awareness, <strong>in</strong>itiative, <strong>in</strong>novation,<br />

decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g, flexibility, patience, care, rigour, meticulous. When prompted,<br />

most students realise that they have often used these skills <strong>and</strong> demonstrated these<br />

attitudes but have so far not articulated the experience <strong>and</strong> realised their value.<br />

Interrogat<strong>in</strong>g practice<br />

• Where do the discipl<strong>in</strong>e Employability Skills <strong>and</strong> Attributes Maps l<strong>in</strong>k with<br />

your teach<strong>in</strong>g?<br />

• How are students made aware of the skills <strong>and</strong> attributes they ga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> the<br />

modules you teach?<br />

• Do students comment on the skills <strong>and</strong> attributes listed <strong>in</strong> the module<br />

outcomes <strong>in</strong> their personal development plann<strong>in</strong>g, reflection <strong>and</strong><br />

evaluation of your module?
