successful completion of an <strong>in</strong>stitutional postgraduate HE teach<strong>in</strong>g qualification. It is<br />

perfectly possible, of course, to build a strong subject-based competence as a teacher<br />

without recourse to a <strong>for</strong>mal programme, but well-delivered, ‘fit-<strong>for</strong>-purpose’<br />

programmes present opportunities <strong>for</strong> structured engagement with key issues <strong>and</strong><br />

processes <strong>in</strong> relation to learn<strong>in</strong>g, teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> assessment, skilled support, mentor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> feedback, <strong>and</strong> an <strong>in</strong>itial exposure to the scholarship of the field.<br />

MOVING ON: BUILDING A BASE OF EXPERIENCE<br />

After achiev<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itial competence <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g there are a number of<br />

proven ways to secure cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g career development. In broad terms these might<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude some or all of the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g experience, confidence <strong>and</strong> competence across a wider repertoire of<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g, learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> assessment methods at both undergraduate <strong>and</strong> postgraduate<br />

levels.<br />

• Lead<strong>in</strong>g the design <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegration of larger ‘units’ of learn<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>for</strong> example, clusters<br />

or sequences of modules across semesters; tak<strong>in</strong>g responsibility <strong>for</strong> the overall quality<br />

of a substantial part or the whole of a course programme.<br />

• Lead<strong>in</strong>g or manag<strong>in</strong>g curriculum <strong>in</strong>novation, both to enhance the student experience<br />

<strong>and</strong> to provide a ‘market advantage’ to the <strong>in</strong>stitution, faculty or department.<br />

• Secur<strong>in</strong>g small <strong>in</strong>stitutional grants <strong>and</strong> competitive national fund<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong><br />

developmental projects or triall<strong>in</strong>g of lead<strong>in</strong>g-edge practice. Success of this k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

develops project management <strong>and</strong> leadership capabilities as well as generat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>academic</strong> outputs <strong>for</strong> dissem<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

• Ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternal teach<strong>in</strong>g awards or similar external recognition such as a National<br />

<strong>Teach<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Fellowship or HEA Senior Fellow status.<br />

• Provid<strong>in</strong>g support, coach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> mentor<strong>in</strong>g to colleagues <strong>and</strong> external, teach<strong>in</strong>grelated<br />

consultancy or tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to other <strong>in</strong>stitutions nationally <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternationally.<br />

Help<strong>in</strong>g to deliver a <strong>for</strong>mal postgraduate teach<strong>in</strong>g programme <strong>for</strong> new staff is<br />

an excellent way of shar<strong>in</strong>g expertise <strong>and</strong> contribut<strong>in</strong>g to the next generation of<br />

teachers.<br />

• Build<strong>in</strong>g a base of expertise as an external exam<strong>in</strong>er, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g chair<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

boards. Undertak<strong>in</strong>g this k<strong>in</strong>d of role exposes <strong>in</strong>dividuals to the f<strong>in</strong>e-gra<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

work<strong>in</strong>gs of a range of other <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>and</strong> helps develop more rounded judgement<br />

about teach<strong>in</strong>g quality <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />

• Significant responsibility with<strong>in</strong> a graduate school.<br />

• Contribut<strong>in</strong>g to the activities of, or tak<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>for</strong>mal role <strong>in</strong>, appropriate national<br />

committees, learned societies <strong>and</strong> HEA Subject Centres.<br />

• Contribut<strong>in</strong>g to the accreditation <strong>and</strong> CPD activities of professional, regulatory <strong>and</strong><br />

statutory bodies. Engagement of this k<strong>in</strong>d provides extensive opportunities <strong>for</strong><br />

subject/professionally specific CPD <strong>and</strong> may be particularly relevant to career
