Glossary<br />

Activity theory Analys<strong>in</strong>g activity (especially <strong>in</strong> the workplace) as a complex<br />

phenomenon which is socially situated. May be used <strong>in</strong> relation to learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g (see also situated learn<strong>in</strong>g).<br />

Adult learn<strong>in</strong>g theory A range of theories <strong>and</strong> constructs claimed to relate specifically<br />

to how adults learn. Includes self-directed learn<strong>in</strong>g. Much of the work on reflection <strong>and</strong><br />

experiential learn<strong>in</strong>g is also part of this area. Concerns over validity of some of the<br />

theories <strong>and</strong> that some aspects are not dist<strong>in</strong>ctively adult.<br />

Affective doma<strong>in</strong> One of the major areas of learn<strong>in</strong>g, the learn<strong>in</strong>g of values.<br />

AIM (Alice Interactive Mathematics) ALICE st<strong>and</strong>s <strong>for</strong> Active <strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> In a Computer<br />

Environment.<br />

Aims (learn<strong>in</strong>g aims) At the top of the hierarchy of description commonly used to<br />

def<strong>in</strong>e a learn<strong>in</strong>g experience. They are <strong>in</strong>tended to provide the student, teacher <strong>and</strong><br />

APL/AP(E) Accreditation of prior learn<strong>in</strong>g. Tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to account previous ‘certificated’<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g ga<strong>in</strong>ed either as whole or part of a programme, towards all or part of a new<br />

qualification. Also the count<strong>in</strong>g of experience (experiential) towards obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a<br />

qualification.<br />

Appraisal (as used <strong>in</strong> higher education) A <strong>for</strong>mal, regular, developmental process <strong>in</strong><br />

which the one be<strong>in</strong>g appraised is encouraged to review <strong>and</strong> reflect upon per<strong>for</strong>mance<br />

<strong>in</strong> the workplace. Usually based on a focused <strong>in</strong>terview with a peer, head of department<br />

or l<strong>in</strong>e manager. At the <strong>in</strong>terview, objectives (l<strong>in</strong>ked to strategic aims of the department)<br />

are set <strong>and</strong> development needs identified. Per<strong>for</strong>mance aga<strong>in</strong>st these objectives is<br />

reviewed at the next appraisal <strong>in</strong>terview.<br />

Approaches to learn<strong>in</strong>g See deep, surface <strong>and</strong> strategic approaches to learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Approaches to study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ventory Adevice used to identify students approach to study.<br />

skills, competencies <strong>and</strong> personal attributes.<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g developed <strong>in</strong> the 1950s <strong>and</strong> 1960s based on drill<strong>in</strong>g, the <strong>for</strong>mation of habit <strong>and</strong><br />

responsibility <strong>for</strong> <strong>and</strong> control of themselves <strong>and</strong> their learn<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>in</strong>g less
