to contribute to the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of new class teachers <strong>in</strong> subsequent years. Some may<br />

subsequently apply <strong>for</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g fellowships of one or two years’ duration. These<br />

enable GTAs to extend the range of teach<strong>in</strong>g responsibilities they have, <strong>and</strong> may<br />

be seen as an important part of their career development as <strong>academic</strong>s. In<br />

addition, GTAs have the option of enroll<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a Postgraduate Certificate <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong>, <strong>and</strong> can complete modules lead<strong>in</strong>g to HEA Associate <strong>and</strong><br />

Fellow status.<br />

OVERVIEW<br />

This chapter has tried to draw attention to dist<strong>in</strong>ctive issues <strong>in</strong> the teach<strong>in</strong>g, learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

assessment of economics. It has drawn attention to recent developments <strong>in</strong> the use of<br />

technology <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g, approaches to h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g the challenge of students’ mathematical<br />

abilities, some issues relat<strong>in</strong>g to students with dyslexia <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ally ways of effectively<br />

support<strong>in</strong>g course teams which <strong>in</strong>clude graduate teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants. The chapter l<strong>in</strong>ks<br />

to recent research <strong>in</strong>to aspects of the student <strong>and</strong> lecturer experience <strong>in</strong> economics <strong>in</strong> the<br />

UK, conducted by the Economics Network.<br />
