Strategic approach to learn<strong>in</strong>g Typifies students who adapt their learn<strong>in</strong>g style to meet<br />

the needs of the set task. Intention is external to the real purpose of the task, as it focuses<br />

on achiev<strong>in</strong>g high marks <strong>for</strong> their own sake, not because they <strong>in</strong>dicate high levels of<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g. Also known as the achiev<strong>in</strong>g approach.<br />

Student-focused approach <strong>Teach<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> which the teacher not only considers the<br />

learners <strong>and</strong> their perspectives, but which students perceive as be<strong>in</strong>g well designed to<br />

help <strong>and</strong> support them <strong>in</strong> achiev<strong>in</strong>g the aims the teacher <strong>in</strong>dicates.<br />

Subject benchmark<strong>in</strong>g A collection of discipl<strong>in</strong>e-specific statements relat<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

undergraduate programmes as published by the QAA.<br />

Subject Centres A network of 24 centres support<strong>in</strong>g the student experience <strong>in</strong> their<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>e, part of the HEA.<br />

Summative assessment The type of assessment that typically comes at the end of a<br />

module or section of learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> awards the learner with a f<strong>in</strong>al mark or grade <strong>for</strong><br />

that section. The <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation about the learner is often used by third parties to <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>m<br />

decisions about the learner’s abilities.<br />

Supervision The relationship between a student <strong>and</strong> supervisor (member of staff) to<br />

facilitate learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> discovery.<br />

Supervisor Person responsible <strong>for</strong> facilitat<strong>in</strong>g the work of students, usually projects<br />

<strong>and</strong> research.<br />

Surface approach to learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> by students which focuses on the details of the<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g experience <strong>and</strong> which is based on memoris<strong>in</strong>g the details without any attempt<br />

to give them mean<strong>in</strong>g beyond the factual level of underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g (see also deep<br />

approach, strategic approach).<br />

Target language The particular <strong>for</strong>eign language be<strong>in</strong>g taught/learnt.<br />

Team teach<strong>in</strong>g A system whereby learn<strong>in</strong>g is designed, delivered <strong>and</strong> supported by<br />

two or more teachers who may share the same session.<br />

Thesis lecture A lecture which builds up a case through argumentation.<br />

Threshold concepts Critical concepts <strong>in</strong> each discipl<strong>in</strong>e, the misunderst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of which<br />

may impede student learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Transferable skills Skills associated with employability. Variously <strong>in</strong>clude communication,<br />

numeracy, IT, learn<strong>in</strong>g to learn, values <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrity, use of technology,<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpersonal skills, problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g, positive attitudes to change <strong>and</strong> teamwork<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Tutorial Used with different mean<strong>in</strong>gs accord<strong>in</strong>g to discipl<strong>in</strong>e, type of <strong>in</strong>stitution, level,<br />

<strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g method. Involves a tutor <strong>and</strong> one or more students. May<br />

focus on <strong>academic</strong> <strong>and</strong>/or pastoral matters.<br />

UK Professional St<strong>and</strong>ards Framework UK descriptors of levels of teach<strong>in</strong>g expertise.<br />

HEA accredited programmes map onto those descriptors (see also HEA).<br />

UUK Universities UK (<strong>for</strong>merly CVCP).<br />

Valid/validity (of assessment) Adequacy <strong>and</strong> appropriateness of the task/test <strong>in</strong><br />

relation to the outcomes/objectives be<strong>in</strong>g assessed (i.e. it measures what it is supposed<br />

to measure).<br />

Video-conference A synchronous discussion between two <strong>in</strong>dividuals or groups of
