MSN Messenger Atool <strong>in</strong>tegrated with W<strong>in</strong>dows that allows users to communicate via<br />

text, audio <strong>and</strong> video, <strong>and</strong> to share content.<br />

National Committee of Inquiry <strong>in</strong>to <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> (NCIHE) The Dear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Committee, set up under Sir Ron (Lord) Dear<strong>in</strong>g by the Conservative government <strong>in</strong><br />

February 1996 to make recommendations <strong>for</strong> the next 20 years about the purposes,<br />

shape, structure, size <strong>and</strong> fund<strong>in</strong>g of higher education. Reported <strong>in</strong> July 1997. The<br />

report commented on aspects such as organisation of programmes, quality matters,<br />

staff development <strong>and</strong> fund<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

National Student Survey (NSS) An exit survey of undergraduate student op<strong>in</strong>ion on<br />

their total student experience. Intended to <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>m student choice.<br />

National <strong>Teach<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Fellow (NTF) National recognition <strong>for</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g excellence (see also<br />

HEA).<br />

Norm-referenced assessment Judges how well the learner has done <strong>in</strong> comparison<br />

with the norm established by their peers.<br />

Objectives Orig<strong>in</strong>ally developed by educational psychologists <strong>and</strong> known as<br />

behavioural objectives. Def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>and</strong> use have become less precise <strong>in</strong> recent years.<br />

Their mean<strong>in</strong>g has ranged from exact, measurable outcomes of specific learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

experiences to more generalised statements of learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes. The term may be<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>guished from or used <strong>in</strong>terchangeably (but loosely) with the term ‘learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

outcomes’.<br />

OMR (optical mark reader) A special scann<strong>in</strong>g device that can read carefully placed<br />

pencil marks on specially designed documents. OMR is frequently used to score <strong>for</strong>ms,<br />

questionnaires <strong>and</strong> answer sheets.<br />

Open learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> flexibly with regard to pace <strong>and</strong> location. Usually associated<br />

with delivery without a tutor be<strong>in</strong>g present. Will often allow learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> order of own<br />

choice, <strong>in</strong> a variety of media <strong>and</strong> may also imply no entry barriers (e.g. no prior<br />

qualifications).<br />

Open source Describes software available <strong>for</strong> free distribution <strong>and</strong> whose source code<br />

is available <strong>for</strong> free modification by users.<br />

Oral exam<strong>in</strong>ation See viva voce exam<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

OSCE (objective structured cl<strong>in</strong>ical exam<strong>in</strong>ation) Cl<strong>in</strong>ical assessment made up of a<br />

circuit of short tasks, known as stations. Several variations on the basic theme.<br />

Typically, c<strong>and</strong>idates pass through a station where an exam<strong>in</strong>er grades them accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to an itemised checklist or global rat<strong>in</strong>g scale.<br />

OSLER (objective structured long exam<strong>in</strong>ation record) Cl<strong>in</strong>ical assessment with some<br />

similarity to an OSCE, but <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g one or more long case.<br />

Passive learn<strong>in</strong>g/approach As opposed to active. <strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> or an approach to learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that is superficial <strong>and</strong> does not <strong>in</strong>volve full engagement with the material.<br />

Pedagogy The practice <strong>and</strong> method of teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> study, <strong>and</strong> research of it.<br />

Peer assessment Assessment by fellow (peer) students, as <strong>in</strong> peer assessment of team<br />

activities.<br />

Peer support A system whereby students support one another <strong>in</strong> the learn<strong>in</strong>g process.<br />

Students may be <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mal groups or <strong>for</strong>mal, designated groups.
