Small Necessities Law (21 Vt. Stat. § 472a)<br />

Covered Employers: Employers with at least 15 employees.<br />

Eligible Employees: Employees who have been continuously employed for one<br />

year, for an average of at least 30 hours per week.<br />

Amount of <strong>Leave</strong>: Twenty-four hours in a 12-month period; not more than<br />

four hours may be taken in any 30-day period. Employer may require<br />

employee <strong>to</strong> take at least two hours of leave at a time.<br />

Reasons for <strong>Leave</strong>: For the employee <strong>to</strong>:<br />

• participate in school activities directly related <strong>to</strong> the academic educational<br />

advancement of the employee’s child, stepchild, foster child, or ward<br />

• attend or accompany a family member <strong>to</strong> routine medical or dental<br />

appointments<br />

• accompany the employee’s parent, spouse, or parent-in-law <strong>to</strong> appointments<br />

for professional services related <strong>to</strong> their care and well-being, and<br />

• respond <strong>to</strong> a medical emergency involving a family member.<br />

Procedural Requirements<br />

• Notice: Employee must provide the earliest possible notice, no fewer than<br />

seven days in advance, except for an emergency.<br />

• Paid <strong>Leave</strong>: Employee may use accrued paid leave at the employer’s<br />

discretion.
