Significance of Primers by Francis Kemps
in Development of Latgalian Orthography and Teaching to Read
Francis (Fraņcs) Kemps has been one of the most popular authors of the Latgalian
original ABC-books. He took part in the progressive movement for improvement
of elementary education and he is the first author of a Latgalian ABC-book to have
used a sound method instead of the spelling method having become obsolete.
A short insight in the comparison of the spelling and sound methods has been
given in the introductory part emphasising the progressive aspects of the sound
method and the appropriateness just of this method for teaching to read in the
Latgalian language.
The greater part of the article has been dedicated to the usage of the Latgalian
orthography in the ABC-books by F. Kemps. The diacritic mark ˆ has been used
above the last monophthong in the ending of the locative case, for example, itymâ
lementarâ, ellê, debesîs. Palatalisation of consonants has been marked by i following
the consonant, for example, Stoniuks, Antiuks, ustobeniâ, tiate. Irrespective of the
author’s note as regards the hard pronunciation of the consonant l before a, o, u and y
and palatalisation by marking it with a comma under the letter l, the author ignores
the rule and writes as follows: liuti, kliowam, pliaun, nedeliu. Although in the
alphabets in the ABC-books published in 1908 and 1909 both v and w have been
included entirely w has been used, for example, wyss, latwyski, wajag. No
consistency is observed in the usage of the personal pronouns of the third person, for
example, winia, ji as well as in the usage of suffixes together with endings, for
example, mosenia, galwinia/galwenia. The following suffixes together with endings
have been used, such as -ets, -ete, for example, zakets, Anete, Werete; the diphthong
yu has been used also in the beginning of the word, for example, yudens.
In the conclusion other topical issues of elementary education nowadays have
been mentioned, namely mandatory school age, teaching to write, illustrating of
ABC-books, etc.
