0.8–0.9 diglossia L1/L2 vs. diglossia L1/L3 and dilalia L1/L3 vs. dilalia
L2/L3
0.9–1.0 monolingualism L1 vs. monolingualism L2 and (almost impossible
in adjacent areas) diglossia with L1 as Lh and L2 as
Ll vs. diglossia with L2 as Lh and L1 as Ll.
To give some examples, we can suppose that the distance between
Paris (ideally monolingual French) and a village in Corsica could be between
about 0.4; among two villages, one in central Germany and the other
in Northern Germany, could be around 0.5; among Riga and Tallinn, with
respectively Latvian and Estonian in contact with Russian, the distance
could be about 0.6; two villages on the opposite sides of the Rhine between
France and Germany about 0.8; and finally Paris and Milan 1.0.
3. As mentioned at the beginning of this chapter, the theory described
above will in the following be applied to the sociolinguistic situation of
Latgale. Table 2 represents, as an example, the figures of the sociolinguistic
distances among 12 of the 74 Latgalian areas studied in Survey Latgale:
white cells include distances between 0 and 0.25, light grey distances between
0.26 and 0.50 and dark grey distances over 0.50; figures in bold represent
distances between areas which directly border each other.
