Perspectives of Latgalian in the Linguistic Landscape of the Region of Latgale<br />
The Latgalian language is a unique value of the region of Latgale that should<br />
be cherished and refined. The linguistic landscape plays an important role in its<br />
preservation and the improvement of its vitality (i.e. its appreciation and the<br />
realization of its potential) since it is closely related to the development of a positive<br />
attitude to the language and to language prestige among different speech<br />
communities, to an improvement of the self-confidence of language users, to<br />
language acquisition, and to strengthening the writing tradition.<br />
However, information gathered about the Latgalian language in the linguistic<br />
landscape shows that the use of Latgalian in Latgale is insignificant (29 language<br />
signs), despite the fact that people want to see more information in Latgalian and that<br />
the predominant linguistic attitude is positive. The potential of Latgalian has not been<br />
realized due to poor writing skills, an unawareness of possible functions of the<br />
