The Concept of Latvianness in the Linguo-territorial Dictionary of Latgale
Since December 2009, the Rezekne Institution of Higher Education has been
carrying out the ESF project "Linguo-culturological and socio-economic aspects of
territorial identity in the development of Latgale region of Latgale"
(1DP/1.1.1.2.0/09/APIA/VIAA/071). One of the results of the project is to develop a
“Linguo-territorial dictionary of Latgale”.
This paper aims to describe the concept of the linguo-territorial dictionary, i.e.
the selection of the type of dictionary, its structure, principles in the selection of the
entries, and the structure of the entries. In the course of the development of the
concept of the dictionary, lexicographic traditions in Latvia are analyzed on the basis
of the experience of Russian lexicographers when producing linguo-culturological,
linguo-geographical and similar types of dictionaries (Фелицына, Прохоров 1988,
Мальцева 1998, Прохорова и др. 2007, etc.). This is related to a number of
theoretical linguo-culturological, linguo-conceptological and cognitive linguistic
works regarding the understanding of a term as a c o n c e p t (Lakoff, Johnson 1980,
Караулов 1987, Wierzbicka 1997, Воркачев 2005) and a m e n t e f a c t (Красных
2003, Крючкова 2009).
The Linguo-territorial Dictionary of Latgale is a multilingual dictionary
(entries are in Latgalian, Latvian, English and Russian) of medium size (approx. 113
author’s sheets). It is of encyclopaedic character and provides detailed explanations
of the concepts but also includes information of philological character. The dictionary
contains 300 concepts and mentefacts which have been selected on the basis of
