These developments have accelerated the process of globalization.<br />

Today, we live in a world that has become more and more interconnected<br />

and interdependent. In other words, we have been more and more<br />

globalized.<br />

Brazil is a major player and has been one of the effective users of<br />

the WTO dispute settlement mechanism. Since the establishment of the<br />

WTO, Brazil has initiated 25 dispute settlement cases as complaints and<br />

effectively protected its trade interest, including important cases such as:<br />

US – Standards for Reformulated and Conventional Gasoline (it was the<br />

first DS case in the WTO); Canada – Measures Affecting the Export of<br />

Civilian Aircraft; US – Patents Code; US – Export Subsidies on Sugar;<br />

EC – Export Subsidies on Sugar; US – Subsidies on Upland Cotton;<br />

US – Domestic Support and Export Credit Guarantees for Agricultural<br />

Products. There have been more individual Brazilian nationals saved as<br />

dispute settlement Panelists in many Panel cases. Brazil has successfully<br />

challenged other keys players on some important systemic issues which<br />

would have far-reaching impact on the multilateral trading system (Charts<br />

1 to 3).<br />
