1.3 The World and China in the Next Decade:
A Perspective from International Politics

Abstract: In the next decade, both the world and China will
undergo complex and profound changes. The world will enter a critical
period featuring the transformation of current world system and the
remodeling of current world order. The international power structure
is taking on a new look that demonstrates a relative balance between
Western and non-Western powers, and the coexistence of cooperation
and competition between traditional and emerging powers. The change
will soon spread to areas like global issues, policy-making mechanisms,
and the ideas of development. For China, the next decade will witness
a huge increase in its comprehensive strength, and a heavy burden of
multiple vulnerabilities. The prospect of China’s rise is determined
by how it utilizes the ever-growing power and whether it can control
the internal conflicts. The rise of China faces a much more complex
environment in the next ten years due to the readjustment and mutual
construction of the relations between China and the world, and an
increase in strategic concerns, and gaps in understanding. As a result,
the diplomacy of China should find a flexible balance between its
national interests and international responsibilities, and between selfdevelopment
and a win-win development strategy with other countries,
and in turn push the relations between China and the world towards
peace, cooperation and development.
