Chinese Taipei joined the WTO at the same time, they are able to have<br />

direct trade link, which led to further increases in trade and investment<br />

between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. Stronger eco<strong>no</strong>mic ties have<br />

reduced political tensions between them.<br />

Thirdly, it ensures the eventual elimination of discriminatory<br />

restrictions against Chinese products as those WTO members maintaining<br />

such discriminatory trade restrictions are bound to phase them out<br />

within the agreed time frame. Thus, <strong>China</strong>’s WTO membership provides<br />

Chinese exports and enterprises in the long run with more security and<br />

predictability in their access to the world market.<br />

Fourthly, access to the multilateral dispute settlement mechanism<br />

provides a fair basis for both <strong>China</strong> and its trading partners to resolve<br />

their disputes and develop harmonious trade relations. Without the access<br />

to the multilateral dispute settlement mechanism, <strong>China</strong> was subject to<br />

constant threats of unilateral trade sanctions and retaliation from its major<br />

trading partners which had chilling effects on trade expansion between<br />

<strong>China</strong> and its trading partners.<br />

Fifthly, <strong>China</strong>, in the current and future multilateral trade negotiations,<br />

has an equal right to make requests for market-access concessions from<br />

other WTO members and claim its legitimate right in the spirit of “give<br />

and take”.<br />

Furthermore, it also ensures <strong>China</strong>’s equal participation in the<br />

rule-making process which is shaping the future multilateral trading<br />

system and the world eco<strong>no</strong>mic governance. Over the past decades,<br />

dramatic changes have taken place in the multilateral trading system.<br />

These changes reflected rapid changes in the world eco<strong>no</strong>my as a result<br />

of globalization and represented the interests of different countries and<br />

eco<strong>no</strong>mies. In other words, <strong>China</strong>’s WTO membership enables <strong>China</strong> to<br />

seek its trade interests are reflected in future rule-making.<br />

5. Brazil-<strong>China</strong> and the WTO – Challenges and Opportunities<br />

As major players in world trade, both Brazil and <strong>China</strong> has a<br />

vital interest in safeguarding the multilateral trading system and in<br />

maintaining an open world market. At the moment, the biggest challenge<br />

to the multilateral trading system is the current impasse of the Doha<br />

Development Agenda (DDA) negotiations. A solution needs to be found<br />
