SECTION 260553 - ELECTRICAL IDENTIFICATION: continued<br />

E. Operational Identification and Warning Plasticized Tags and Metal Signs and Plastic Signs:<br />

1. General: Install signs with instruction or warnings wherever reasonably required to<br />

ensure safe and efficient operation and maintenance <strong>of</strong> electrical systems, electrically<br />

connected mechanical systems and general systems and equipment. Signs shall be placed<br />

to prevent misuse <strong>of</strong> electrical facilities by unauthorized personnel. When signs are<br />

installed on switches, outlets, controls, devices and covers <strong>of</strong> electrical enclosures they<br />

may be self-adhesive vinyl or plastic. Where detailed instructions or explanations are<br />

needed, provide plasticized tags with clearly written messages adequate for intended<br />

purposes.<br />

F. Danger Signs:<br />

1. General: In addition to installation <strong>of</strong> danger signs specified, indicated, and required by<br />

governing regulations and authorities, install appropriate danger signs at locations<br />

indicated and at locations subsequently identified by Installer <strong>of</strong> electrical work as<br />

constituting similar dangers for persons in or about Project.<br />

2. Critical Switches/Controls: Install danger signs on switches and similar controls,<br />

regardless <strong>of</strong> whether concealed or locked up, where untimely or inadvertent operation<br />

(by anyone) could result in significant danger to persons or damage to or loss <strong>of</strong> property.<br />

3. Provide the following danger sign on the equipment indicated:<br />

a. "Danger This Machine Starts Automatically" on all air compressors.<br />

G. Warning Signs:<br />

1. Provide an orange background sign with black letters reading "WARNING: LOAD<br />

SIDE OF SWITCH MAY BE ENERGIZED BY BACKFEED" on all tie switches and tie<br />

circuit breakers.<br />

2. Provide cable tray warning signs with 1-1/2-inch high black letters on an orange<br />

background that reads: "Warning! Not to be used as a walkway, ladder, or support for<br />

ladders for personnel." Provide on each side <strong>of</strong> cable tray at 10-foot intervals, visible<br />

from the floor below.<br />

H. Equipment/System Identification Nameplates:<br />

1. General: Install engraved plastic-laminated nameplates on each major unit <strong>of</strong> electrical<br />

equipment in the building; including central or master unit <strong>of</strong> each electrical system<br />

including communication/control/signal/alarm systems, unless unit is specified with its<br />

own self-explanatory identification or signal system. Except as otherwise indicated,<br />

provide single line <strong>of</strong> text, 1/2-inch high lettering on 1-1/2-inch high sign (2 inches high<br />

where two lines are required), black lettering on white field. Provide text matching<br />

terminology and numbering <strong>of</strong> the contract documents and shop drawings. Nameplate<br />

shall include unit designation, normal source circuit number ("Fed from..."), circuit<br />

voltage, and other data specifically indicated. Nameplate shall indicate normal source<br />

circuit number ("Fed from..."), and emergency source circuit number ("Fed from..."),<br />

when the equipment is a transfer switch or fed directly from a transfer switch. Provide<br />

nameplates for each unit <strong>of</strong> the following categories <strong>of</strong> electrical work:<br />

a. Switchboards, panelboards, electrical cabinets, and enclosures. (Include main bus<br />

ampacity on the nameplate.)<br />

b. Access panel/doors to electrical facilities.<br />

c. Major electrical switchgear (include main bus ampacity on the nameplate).<br />

d. Electrical substations (include main bus ampacity on the nameplate).<br />

e. Motor control centers (include main bus ampacity on the nameplate), and individual<br />

motor starters.<br />

f. Disconnect switch.<br />
