D. When soil to be seeded has a pH value <strong>of</strong> less than 5.8, evenly spread ground limestone, which<br />

is dry and free flowing, over area to be seeded at rate that will change soil pH value to 6.5.<br />

Thoroughly mix limestone into upper 3 to 4 inches <strong>of</strong> soil by discing, harrowing, or other<br />

approved method.<br />

E. Within limits set forth under materials, select fertilizer for use on the project. Use one<br />

selection throughout project. Apply fertilizer in quantity necessary to yield 60 pounds <strong>of</strong><br />

nitrogen per acre. Thoroughly mix fertilizer into upper 3 to 4 inches <strong>of</strong> soil by discing,<br />

harrowing, or other approved method.<br />

F. Water dry soil at least 24 hours prior to seeding to obtain a loose friable seed bed.<br />

G. Before applying seed, remove all stones, rocks, lumps, roots, wires, clods, and other objects<br />

measuring 1/2 inch or larger in any dimension.<br />

3.02 APPLICATION:<br />

A. Broadcast half <strong>of</strong> seed with mechanical seeder.<br />

B. Broadcast remaining half <strong>of</strong> seed at right angles to first seeding pattern, using same broadcast<br />

method.<br />

C. Apply seed at the rate specified in the Standard <strong>Specifications</strong>.<br />

D. Cover seed to depth <strong>of</strong> 1/8 inch by raking or other approved method.<br />

E. Roll seeded area with roller weighing maximum <strong>of</strong> 150 pounds per foot <strong>of</strong> width.<br />

F. Water seeded area until water penetrates to a depth <strong>of</strong> 3 to 4 inches.<br />

3.03 PROTECTION:<br />

A. Erect temporary signs and barriers to protect seeded areas from pedestrian and vehicular<br />

traffic.<br />

3.04 MULCH INSTALLATION:<br />

A. General:<br />

1. Apply straw or cellulose mulch to seeded areas within 7 days <strong>of</strong> seed application.<br />

2. Secure straw mulch immediately after placing. Use chemical binder or mulch netting or<br />

secure by crimping or tilling.<br />

3. Install erosion control matting immediately after seed application, where designated on<br />

the plans.<br />

4. Leave all mulch in place and allow to disintegrate, except remove excessive amounts <strong>of</strong><br />

straw mulch as directed.<br />

B. Straw Mulch:<br />

1. Quantity <strong>of</strong> straw mulch shall conform with Section 735 <strong>of</strong> the Standard <strong>Specifications</strong>.<br />

C. Binder Straw Mulch:<br />

1. Evenly distribute binder over mulch.<br />

2. Quantity <strong>of</strong> mulch binder shall conform with Section 735 <strong>of</strong> the Standard <strong>Specifications</strong><br />

and the <strong>Delaware</strong> Erosion and Sediment Control Handbook.<br />

D. Mulch Anchoring:<br />

1. Mulch crimping or tilling shall be accomplished in accordance with the standards<br />

established in Section 735 <strong>of</strong> the Standard <strong>Specifications</strong>.<br />

2. Mulch netting shall be lightweight biodegradable paper, plastic, or cotton, and shall be<br />

securely stapled in accordance with the manufacturer's written instructions.<br />

E. Erosion control matting shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's written<br />

instructions and per SECTION 312500 <strong>of</strong> these <strong>Specifications</strong>.<br />

F. The quantity <strong>of</strong> wood cellulose mulch shall be in accordance to Section 735 <strong>of</strong> the Standard<br />

<strong>Specifications</strong>.<br />
