Impacts of land-based pollution on Coastal Waters The consequences of this unhealthy situation expose the environment to serious water pollution and the resultant health hazards that may lead to serious epidemic not only in Lagos but also in neighbouring coastal areas. The septic tank /soakaways and pit latrine systems also have negative impacts on groundwater to gradual and steadily increasing pollution from septage indiscriminately discharged into the Lagos lagoon system, since the water table of the State is very high, because majorities of the land are reclaimed land. Human excreta contain a lot of organisms, which are major vectors of water-related diseases. These organisms include viruses, which can cause poliomyelitis, viral meningitis, hepatitis, fevers, diarrhoea: Bacteria, which can lead to cholera, typhoid / paratyphoid, and diarrhoea: Protozoa, which cause dysentery, colonic ulcers and diarrhoea: Helminths, which result to guinea worm, round worm, live flukes and schistosomaiasis. Likewise, the industrial wastewater is full of heavy metals, which results into chemical pollution of the water bodies. Such heavy metals are mercury, arsenic, copper, cyanide, iron, lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, phenols etc which cause chronic diseases such as cancer in the inhabitants of the State and neighbouring countries using the same coastal waters, because pollution has no boundary. 94
Challenges in the Era of Globalization Edited by Emmanuel Obuah As have been indicated above, the high level of urbanization and industrialization of the Lagos metropolis and its environs with the inevitable generation and lack of management of land-based (point and diffuse) pollution sources have led to undesirable impacts on the near shore coastal aquatic environment and biota. Primary concerns are the effects of land based pollution on bio-diversity, the maintenance of a hitherto viable artisanal commercial fisheries and the safety of humans exposed to the pollution occupationally and through tropics relationships. The pollution impact are exacerbated in these low energy micro tidal environment by a restricted circulation, and shallow interconnecting creeks which are also sites of active silting and deposition of mud resulting in habitat modification or loss for the benthos. The effective control of environmental pollution should be based on the best available information on the sources that produce it and the quantities that are generated. Waste generated in the Lagos area thus largely dependant on the sources, basically. 1. Domestic This includes food waste, paper, plastics, glass, tin cans, wood, textile etc. 2. Commercial This includes waste generated from Stores, Restaurants, Markets, Office buildings, Hotels, Print shops, Service stations Auto Repair shops etc. 3. Institutional Schools, Hospitals, Prisons, and Government Centres 4. Municipal Street cleaning, Landscaping, Parks, Beaches and other recreation centres. 5. Industrial and Agricultural This include waste generated from Construction, Fabrication, Light and Heavy Manufacturing, Refineries, Chemical Plants, Demolition, producing material such as chemicals, these wastes often contain several poisonous substances that will contaminate the soil. Pesticides and herbicides used by farmers to increase crop yields also pollute the land when they are washed into the soil. This knowledge is meaningfully essential for assessing the risk or hazard estimates with respect to human safety and environmental health in general. Strategic control, management and development of actions and options should be hinged on this knowledge in order to make impact in addressing environmental problems. The major handler of domestic and industrial solid waste in the city of Lagos is the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). It operates five landfills or open dump sites for the land disposal of domestic and industrial wastes. Many industrial establishments also contract out the disposal of their solid wastes to private contractors. The dumping of such wastes is indiscriminate since contractors dump at any convenient site. Waste generation expressed as per capita per day in Nigeria ranges from 0.21kg to 0.78kg among the 15cities surveyed with a mean of 0.49kg/cap day (FMWH, 1983). The initial assessment indicated that industrial sources (e.g grain milling and manufacturing of cement) contribute substantially to particulate emissions in the Lagos area. SO2 and NO2 emissions were particularly important from the manufacturing of cement while non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) were significantly released from beer brewing.
