Abstract Tertiary educational institutions play a crucial role in socio-economic advancement of any nation. Ghana’s educational system hitherto trained students for legal and administrative positions with little regard to prepare students to consider self-employment as a career option. Recently, series of reforms have been initiated to make the educational system more responsive to national needs in order to stem widespread graduate unemployment. In response, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana, has introduced new programmes including entrepreneurship education. The study investigates its effect on key enterprising competencies and skills development as well as on career intentions. Ten percent of the final year undergraduate Business Administration students were randomly selected and questionnaires administered to them. The study revealed that entrepreneurship education aids in the development of key enterprising competencies. In this regard, KNUST entrepreneurship educational programmes appear responsive to national needs. In addition, respondents felt entrepreneurship education had positively affected their career intention to a large extent. However, further studies are needed to evaluate specific programmes to ascertain their respective relevance to engendering enterprising competencies and skills development. Introduction Tertiary education, a key to socio-economic advancement of any nation, aims at providing a world-class base of skills, including enterprising competencies, to drive economic growth globally (Charney and Libecap, 2000). However, the tertiary educational system in Ghana, hitherto, trained students for legal and administrative positions with little regard to preparing them for self-employment (Afenyadu et al. 2001; Oketch and Otieno, 1999). This colonially-inspired tertiary education has not served Ghana well. It has rather contributed to a widespread graduate unemployment and underemployment, in spite of government supported efforts to train and motivate unemployed graduates for self-employment (GSS, 1988; Dwomo-Fokuo, 2001). Recently, questions have been asked in Ghana as to which capabilities are being developed in graduates by the higher education process in general (TV3, 2010; Afenyadu et al., 2001; Afenyadu, 1998). In addition, more direct questions have also been asked about whether Ghanaian higher education influences graduates towards careers in direct wealth creation sectors of the economy as opposed to those in the public sector (NBSSI, 2001). Currently, the unemployment rate in Ghana is estimated at 21%; while that of the youth is between 20- 24%. In addition, the absence of matching jobs is three times the percentage of unemployment (Ghanaian Chronicle, 2010). This shows that both national and graduate unemployment are high in Ghana. These and many others have compelled the Ghanaian government, the leading investor in higher education, to urge higher educational institutions to restructure their curricula to focus on developing enterprising graduates and to encourage graduates to include self-employment in their long-term career goals. Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), a leading university in Ghana, has taken up this challenge and has introduced many new programmes. It is now on the throes of implementing a comprehensive entrepreneurship development programme including Kumasi Business Incubator, Enterprise Centres etc. (Adarkwa, 2010).
